Jan 6, 2011 4:43 AM in response to Arcade99by Alan Dutton-Smith,Hello again everyone,
Since my post yesterday, I have had a couple of conversations with Apple Support (Ireland) on this subject. They seemed to be unaware of how many of us have this problem (they are now), although they do know what the symptoms are.
Apple are working on the handshake problem, but cannot give any indication of when a solution will be available. They asked that anyone who can should contact them to give them details of their tv make and model, the approximate time from switch-on to breakdown, and any other relevant details. (I presume the guy I talked to in Ireland spoke for Cupertino as well). When they have a solution, which will probably be a software upgrade, they will email me, and post here. No doubt MacFixIt will know at the same time.
I also spoke to the tech service department at Finlux UK (manufacturer of my tv), who said they were unaware of any handshake problem on their side, but had heard rumours of a problem with ATV. They do not have any firmware update to solve it, but suggested trying an HDMI to DVI video conversion cable, and plugging ATV to the video input. Maybe it will work. If I decide to go this way, I will post the result tomorrow. -
Jan 6, 2011 1:42 PM in response to Alan Dutton-Smithby ILiOS324,A small update on my side. I have a Philips 9664 TV with the same problem. However, someone on this forum suggested something, and so far it has worked.
On the Philips TV, when you define a new input, you can select from a list of predefined names the type of device you are connecting to the TV (e.g. DVD, HD digital receiver, HT system, etc.) and the TV input (e.g. HDMI 2).
Since there was nothing close to the ATV, I chose "Other" as the type of device.
Now, someone here suggested to choose an HD device, so I tried it, and chose "HD Recorder" as the type of device.
I've just finished watching a show for over an hour without the color inversion issues. I also think that ATV was open yesterday for more then 20 minutes without this issue.
I need to test this more, but I hope I can be a little more hopeful that this is a solution. I thought the device names had no meanings, but perhaps they do define to the TV how to handle the connection. -
Jan 6, 2011 1:54 PM in response to ILiOS324by Joe Proctor, thanks, i have the same tv with the same problem. i will also test this out, likely this weekend and see if this solves the problem. -
Jan 6, 2011 3:50 PM in response to Joe Proctorby TheGingerAce,Same problem with my Sony TV, has anyone tried a different cable, as in trying some sort of HDMI to DVI or to Component wire that are on sale? Dont know if it would work but might?? -
Jan 6, 2011 8:53 PM in response to TheGingerAceby ILiOS324,I tried a different cable with the Philips, and it didn't work. Regarding an HDMI->DVI cable, you might be losing the ability to play HD content. I don't think it would support HDCP. -
Jan 7, 2011 2:33 AM in response to ILiOS324by MarcelNL,Changed divice tot HD recorder. Watched a three hour movie yesterday without the inverted colors. But today same old story..... so didn't help... -
Jan 7, 2011 6:16 AM in response to Arcade99by NiclasAa,Well, I had enough of the 2nd gen ATV yesterday. Not only is the handshake problem a real pain in the a.. but I also have to fiddle around for way too long to get the ATV setup whenever I change my network and it looses it's connection.
And it has taken Apple WAY to long to get this fixed now. So my ATVs are back in their boxes and in the attic now. Not buying anything like this from Apple again, or renting any more movies.
I am now using a Nokia N8 with downloaded movies and TV shows from other sources and that works just like a charm. -
Jan 7, 2011 10:40 AM in response to dwagner1270by sebman1,I called 2 days ago the French Apple Support service.
After explaining my problem to the main technician, I was sent to the "superior technician".
So he explained me :that Apple was aware of this problem
that this problem occurs only in 4 countries (France, Germany, Netherland and UK or Ireland, I don't remember... sorry my english and irish friends....) on Philips and Sony TV
that Apple has imported TV from those countries to investigate seriously on this problem
that the hardware isn't incriminated, the solution will come soon by a software upgrade.
Of course, they can't tell when.
So wait and see (in magenta colors ;-))) -
Jan 7, 2011 10:56 AM in response to sebman1by Alan Dutton-Smith,It is nice to see a response from Apple, even if it's indirect!
Sadly, there are other makers' tv's affected, including mine, a Finlux. I hope Apple finds a universal fix (and soon). -
Jan 7, 2011 11:01 AM in response to sebman1by jwr108,I may have missed it earlier, but is it true that this is a Europe-only issue, or are there similar problems in the US? -
Jan 7, 2011 11:50 AM in response to jwr108by CmdrRayGun,Quite a few of us Yanks here with same problem. I opined back at page 15 or 16. -
Jan 7, 2011 11:58 AM in response to sebman1by stepra,I'm in Italy and I have the same problem with a Sony Bravia and ATV2: the trouble occurs in more then 4 countries. -
Jan 7, 2011 12:04 PM in response to jwr108by tgibbs,No reason for this to be country dependent, as HDMI is HDMI. This looks like a hardware issue, although it could be that the affected TVs are sold more in some countries. -
Jan 7, 2011 3:30 PM in response to Alan Dutton-Smithby cartiglia,Just tried ATV 2 with a Sony Bravia LED TV: goes boink every 20-30 minutes.
Sometimes the screen goes black for 1-2 sec and then recovers correctly, some other times it does not come back correctly.
For now I just plug-unplug the cable or change the input selection on the TV for a few seconds..

Jan 8, 2011 1:12 AM in response to Arcade99by Louiecypher,I'm getting impatient for an update now. I suppose with everything else going on (Mac App Store, new iPhone and iPad 2), maybe resources are being deployed elsewhere.
However, looking at the pages and views on this topic I would have thought it might have warranted a higher priority than it seems to be receiving.
My patience is holding for now. Just.
