Q: iPad just stopped working; will not turn on

My iPad has suddenly stopped working. I picked it up this morning to read one of my newspaper apps and it won't turn on. The screen is completely blank. It was working normally last night. I thought maybe the battery had run out so I plugged it is to recharge but it still would not turn on. Do you think it might be the battery? I bought it in July. Thought the battery would last longer than that.

    Dasiy,

A similar thing happened to my iphone. Try hold down the on/off button and the home button for about 10 seconds or until the apple logo appears on the screen. Good luck.....

Thanks much! I had already tried the HOME+ BUTTON restart, I thought, and was ready to take the ipad in somewhere for replacement, but after reading your post, I tried it again and counted slowly to 10. It came on.

Amazing how long 10 seconds is nowdays.

I've had the same problem with my new iPad. You're solution worked but when I took it into the Apple Store Genius bar, they couldn't find anything wrong. They warned me, though, not to use this solution. They just said to bring it in when it shut down next time. I work over 100 miles from Apple so that doesn't work for me. I've used the home/on button solution a couple of times now and I haven't seen that it caused a problem.

Yep the same thing happened to me as well Everything was working OK then later in the afternoon I tried to turn iPad on and ...nothing.
Followed advice to hold down Home button and Start button at the same time for 10 seconds and device started as "good as gold"
iPad was bought at end of June 2010 and has never missed a beat till now.

They gave you some bad advice. Starting up the iPad by home+lock does not harm an iPad in any way.

Yes, same thing happened to me. It worked one minute, then I turned it off to answer a call, then tried to turn it back on and it would not turn on. I plugged it in all night, and still nothing. So, I got on line and read your posts, and sure enough, I pushed both the on button and home button at the same time, counted to 10, and it came on. Unbelievable. thank you!

Same for me!! I was playing with an app and it just turned off on me and would not turn back on. I too thought maybe the battery died, but I knew I had at least 80% of battery life left, and I connected it to the charger anyway. After 20mins, it still wouldn't turn on. I found this discussion on a search engine and held the power button and home button for 10 seconds, and after about 5 seconds it turned right back on! Thank you so much!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for this post. I had just finished posting a blog entry and sat my iPad down for a moment. When I returned the screen was blank and I could not turn it on. Frantic does not begin to explain the state I was in. My iPad is sued for data collection on a major research project. With interviews lined up for this afternoon, this technology failure would have had catastrophic effects. I tried your solution and it worked. Thank goodness there are people willing to share solutions.

Same thing here. Your solution worked great. I am concerned that it happened at all. Any thoughts why?? Makes me nervous!!
