Mr. Mini Australia Level 1 Level 1 (65 points)
Hi, I have a new 30GB video iPod, all seems to be working fine except:

When I'm listening to mp3s (not every file, but most) and I scroll the volume up or down it makes a crackling noise above the music on the left speaker. It is not the clicker as I have tried it with the clicker setting off.

This only happens during playback of a song, and it sounds like a kind of staticy crackle. Does anybody else experience this? Do you think it is worth getting a replacement over?

PC - Windows XP Professional, iPod video 30GB

sounds to me like you busted your speaker in the headphone (which with these headphones is very easy to do with high bass)

I agree with dothakking, you can simply bust or injure these apple headphones. I had the same exact problem with my third generation 15 gb ipod.I replaced the headphones with sony slingshots, never heard the crakling again.
(hate to say it but apple makes terribly built products)just got a new 30 gb ipod video last week and is allready showing damage. Scratches to skipping of the tracks. So just new headphones. hopefully it will be allright.

Hey guys, thanks for the tip, but with any headphones the problem remains. I am aware that the Apple earbud headphones are very average, but I'll try to explain the situation better.

No matter what earphones I use, it is most noticable at the start of a track or where the music is softer, I will scroll up and down the clickwheel to adjust the volume and this will trigger a series of clicky pop noises mainly in the left speaker, the action of adjusting the volume is definitely responsible for this. Maybe you could try on your iPod and see if the same happens when playing mp3 files. Thanks for the help though.

yes... that happened to me for a few minutes... it was just that one song my friend said.

I have the same problem. Even when a song is paused, I hear a crackle if I adjust the volume past the 75% mark or so.

Does anyone else notice this on a 5g?

I replaced my iPod, it is still the same... I don't know if it only happens with the black 30gigs, or in all models. I just decided to live with it... unless Apple one day recognise this issue with their players...

I have a white 30gb so it's definitely not color-specific. At least I now know that my unit (probably) isn't defective. I can live with the problem too, but it is a bit annoying once you notice it.

Hopefully this is something that can be fixed via a future firmware update, along with the other issues (slow menus, slow track advances...)

I also have this problem with my 5G. The best way to hear this problem is to pause the audio and scroll up and down woth the scroll wheel and you can hear the crackling. Glad to hear others are having the problem. This will probably get sorted out in a much welcomed firmware update. I bought a 3G 15GB iPod the week those came out and there were tons of little problems like this that all were solved in a firmware update or 2. I can live with it for now. Strangely I don't hear the audio crackling with all files, but I do with most.

I have the same static/crackle problem with my new White 60 GB. It's not the clicker and this happens with several different headphones.

I am getting the crackle in the left channel also - thru all headpones when changing the volume. It is very annoying.

had the crackling on my 5G 30GB black ipod and was told to remove the tracks and import again. still had the same problem so turned off the EQ settings and it seemed to cure all the crackling. its a shame if the problem is a fault with the EQ cos it does add a lot to most tracks, hope firmware updates can help.
