Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Today I'll add a nice element to the discussion that I hope could be useful for technicians to understand what is going on with ATV2.

    This sounds interesting to me:

Using with SAME HDMI cable I have connected the SAME Atv2 (which had this annoying problem when connected to a Sony Bravia 37EX402) to another TV set (Panasonic VIERA TH-42PZ80E) and you know what? IT WORKS PERFECTLY!. No interruptions of image, no color changings no nothing. It just works fine. VERY FINE. For hours without problems at all.
I am not a technicians but this sounds to me like an incompatibility issue (for misterious reasons) with some TV mother board of VERY LAST generation. Apple should identify this problem in an easier way if they know that it is a problem related to only certain tv brands and/or models. I must also add that the Sony Bravia 37EX402 which the ATV2 was originally connected to, was a TV purchased in Switzerland, so you should add this country to the list of the 'faulty places'.
Hope this can be of some help to all of you readers and to Apple support for helping them to narrow a little bit more the problem and having finally this annoying situation solved.

Thank you all for your attention

I too have this problem in Ireland, I recently bought a Philips IE56PFL9954H12 TV. This problem has really disappointed me as I was very impressed with ATV2 up to now and I have cancelled by DVD postal rental account, I might be reopening it! I don't have this problem with my other TVs and I hope its sorted too. Currently I have tried activating PC mode on the TV so I'll let you know how that works out. It removes the picture processing though. So far I have reset TV and ATV2 still have the problem. The only fix I have is to change the channel and change back again but that is such an inconvenience. I don't have this problem with other HD devices.

I have the exact same issue with my Philips 32PFL8404 TV and the new Apple TV Black.
Unplugging only seems to be a temporary solution.

I got the inversed colours all 10 minutes with the Apple TV2 and my Philips 22PFL5614H. I solved the problem with connecting the Apple to my Onkyo TX-SR508 Receiver and then with HDMI-out to the Philips TV. Works perfectly, no more problems for the tested 2 hours.

Same problem with my new ATV2 and Sony Bravia. I'm from Italy and I bought my Sony TV in 2009 (August). I have no other solutions than switching to a different HDMI source with my remote and then going back to the Apple TV HDMI source. It works but it's impossible watching a 2hrs movie in such conditions.

I hate to report this, but today this problem happened again. So switching to an "HD" named input doesn't help.

Today found an interesting pattern. Getting started, then after 20 minutes the green screen. WARNING! Pull fiber optic cable and appletv returns to normal color, but then again for 20 minutes. Back to insert an optical cable, and again the picture returns to normal, but on 40 minutes ..
Also helps hibernation. I have Philips serias 9000 and i connect my Apple TV I connect with a speaker system with optical cable.

    Apple, please solve this problem!

Well, if everybody that's posted here sends out an issue report, that would help.
I've just submitted one , link is posted in this thread by another user.
    (Forgot your name, but thanks.)

I also notice a slight jerkyness from time to time watching movies on ATV2 that doesn't happen on my other TV which is a 32inch old generation JVC flatscreen, I'd say its related to this handshaking issue, sky HD and Blue Ray is flawless on the TV. Has anyone else noticed this jerkyness, takes a keen eye to spot it?

Just to observe that having it work for two hours is not a solution. From what I have seen, it may work for as long as 12 hours before stuffing up again.

AFAIK there is no easy solution/workaround, changing the input type on the panel, power cycling changing cables, rerouting via switches/amps or not etc. etc. will all temporarily restore correct function. This is only because they force a restart on the HDMI bus. If the TV has the problem with ATV2 it will come back.

Don't waste your time futzing your setup. The only solution is that everyone with the problem makes as many contacts with Apple as possible: call them, log problems on web sites, email lists and anything else you can think of. Only Apple can fix it. Old panels like mine don't even have upgradable firmware. The more reports they get, the higher will be the priority of fixing the issue. Particularly if the media pick it up.

When you do make any contact quote the model number of the TV. The more data they have the easier the problem is to identify and reproduce.

    Mine is a Philips 32PF9966/79.

I'm experiencing HDCP handshake issues too with my Apple TV 2. I'm using the Apple HDMI cable, and have a Sony Bravia KDL-32S2000 purchased in the United States.

    Symptoms:
    - Can't play content rented from iTunes store. When I try I get this error message: "This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection. This content requires HDCP for playback."
    - Can't play content from Netflix. When I try I get the same error message.
    - When watching YouTube videos I occasionally get a flash of snow (sync issue?)

This has been super frustrating and I've tried every troubleshooting tip in the book including unplugging and replugging, resetting my router, restoring factory settings, etc. I even took the Apple TV 2 back to the store to get a new one that did not have the latest firmware update and same problems.

Apple please make a firmware fix now!

    Dear All,

I too was given a Apple TV 2 for Christmas. On Dec 31 tried to set it up with my Philips 42PF9996 TV. Pink screen; Since I purchased a high quality cable just for the setup I was curious as to whether it was the Apple TV or the cable. Took cable and Apple TV to a much newer TV in the kitchen( a Samsung) and everything worked great. SO it isn't the Apple TV or the cable. Trouble is I don't want to watch movies in my kitchen on the hard stools! Since I see so many people with the same problem I am just going to take the Apple TV back. My Philips TV is fine and I am not going to replace it. As a new 27 iMAc, old macbook pro, iphone 4( and one form the first month), ipad , ipod owner I have come to trust apple to make my life easier. I am very upset with Apple not fixing this problem yet.

    Thanks

I had the same problem, but using a Sony TV.
I solved the problem connecting ATV HDMI cable not directly to TV set, but to AV amplifier I have. My device has HDMI input and output jacks.
    Now ATV works perfectly.

At this time not all LCD TVs are abel to handshake with the Apple TV. Some have video conflicts and others sound, some both. So it will remain the same till Apple fix it with a firmware update to the Apple TV. TV manufactures do not all use the same Codec so it is up to Apple to conform. Interesting enough not so many are experiencing difficulties with TVHD sets
