Currently Being ModeratedNov 25, 2010 10:36 PM (in response to MtnBiker)Okay, new problem. It looked like it was all ready to work. I changed my id to my primary email, but when trying to create the account through mobile me I got an error message saying the "maximum number of free accounts have been activated on this iPhone." From what I have read it seems that there is a three account limit. I am unsure of how three account got registered. Anybody have any idea how to delete account or any other solution to this problem???????MacBook3,1 2GHz
Currently Being ModeratedDec 1, 2010 2:33 AM (in response to MtnBiker)Ok have done all the steps talked about. Verified my email accounts. Then deleted my second account. However, when I changed my apple id to the same name as my primary email account it wouldnt let me, giving me this error message;
This email address is already in use or you may already have an Apple ID associated with this email address. Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID.
My apple id is just a login name so I dont see why even if this name is associated with an email address why it wont work. Anyone have the same problem???
Currently Being ModeratedDec 1, 2010 1:23 PM (in response to MtnBiker)Same issue here Cannot use "Find my iPhone" despite changing my e-mail address as AppleID and verifying it twice...
Been trying the tricks from the posts here but no luck
Contacted MobileMe chat support who asked me to reset my network settings on my iPhone and try on both 3G and WiFi but that did not help.. so they re-routed me to iTunes support who did not have a clue either and re-routed me to phone support who could only tell me to create a new AppleID! No way!
Really Very frustrating!MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5), iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1
Currently Being ModeratedJan 11, 2011 9:12 PM (in response to MtnBiker)It was the old AppleID isn't in the form of an email address issue. Went to the Apple ID management webpage described here, made my old AppleID go away by having my email (already on file) become my AppleID. Bam. It works. Thanks for the post on how to fix this gang. And shame on Apple for not explaining this outright in the Find My iPhone process.iPhone 4, iOS 4
Currently Being ModeratedFeb 26, 2011 2:42 PM (in response to MtnBiker)I would like Apple to give me back the 2 hours I wasted trying to figure this out. Seriously this is absolutely ridiculous! Entering my existing Apple ID and password should not be this difficult!

I'm also having issues with this as well.
I have an AppleID that is just username. I have had the same AppleID for a few years now, as it's primarily used for iTunes (like everybody else) and for logging into Apple Discussions.
Now that I have bought myself an iPad 2 - I want to be able to set up Find My iDevice... but it's not letting me.
I've read through several posts of others who are experiencing the same thing, but nobody really has provided any answers.
I've logged into AppleID - I've confirmed that my email address associated with my AppleID is verified, but I cannot change my AppleID to firstname.lastname@example.org. When I try to, it says:
"This email address is already in use or you may already have an Apple ID associated with this email address. Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID."
The furstrating leading on from this is, now, if I want to use Find My iDevice, I have to create a new AppleID in the format of email@example.com.
But because I only have one email address, I can't create another ID with the same email address, so I'm left with the only option of creating a new secondary email address, which is ridiculous.
And to top it all off, it's not working with gmail addresses... just great. How is it that something that's supposedly so convenient, turns out to be the most inconvenient??

I was having the same problem and after not being able to get any support at all from Apple (Unless I pay), I decided to just create a new account when setting this up. I used a GMAIL email account I have, other than my original hotmail, and it worked perfectly. Now I have Find My iPhone application working perfectly.
Apparently they do have a problem with some Apple accounts, since I tried everything (Reset my Apple account password, tested it, etc.) and nothing worked. Then at the end did the new Account creation and it worked without any problems. I am sure Apple will say I had the wrong Apple account credentials, but I am sure I had the right ones, so there is definitely something wrong with their database and my recommendation is not to waste your time and just create a new one, before you lose your device.

I managed to sort my issue out.
Called Apple support and after 40mins on the phone trying all different solutions (for tech support, they weren't very tech savvy - probably just going through their own standard check list) I managed to change my AppleID from username to firstname.lastname@example.org.
And after all the frustration, I was able to change this through my Store settings on my iPad.
On the ipad go to Settings -> Store -> where it has your Apple ID tap that -> select Vieu Apple ID -> Enter your password (if prompted). This will bring up your Account information.
Where it has your Apple ID - tap on it to edit it and change it from username to username @ domain.com. Once your finished, select Done.
It should then take you back to your Store Settings, and your Apple ID should now be in the email@example.com format. You can check this by either opening the iTunes store or App Store, and scrolling down to the bottom to see your account summary.
Once this is done, then you should be able to set up FMIP using the processes set out by Apple on the website... ie setting it up by adding the MobileMe account to your iDevice, and also setting it up via the MobileMe website.
Hope that helps :-)

Thank you sir! I am an iOS game developer, so I know the ins and outs of the OS like the back of my hand. However I was completely stumpted while trying to resolve this exact same issue with my developer tag (apple id). Changing my name through my iPad was the only way I could get this to work correctly.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU....I have been struggling with this problem for a few days now and this is the only thing that works. I would have never even thought the only way to change my AppleID would be through my iPad

I am still wondering why Apple requires us to log in for free piece of software?! (I am trying to install a free app. on my iPhone).
I am getting very frustrated by my iPhone4 because it won't take my ApplID's password! And I have changed it a few days ago (for that very reason), but still wont take it?!
My ID is correct and shows my whole email adddress but the password is the problem!
Anyway....Thanks for your effort and solution though, it seems everyone is happy about it.(I take your solution over any "expert" cuz you have walked thru this)!
I'll try to correct this problem somehow...Thanks again for the solution, I did not know where to go change ID etc. Now I know. Thanks 2U!
