Q: iMovie '11 audio sync issues since 9.01 patch

I have an iMac 27 and have been importing old MiniDV tapes since Christmas. The camcorder is a Canon HV20 connected via FireWire. I had no issues until the iMovie 9.01 patch AND Mac OS X 10.6.6 patch.

I have imported 15-20 hours with the patch applied and it appears that the longer the event/segment, the worse the sync issues becomes late in the import. On the camcorder LCD everything looks fine.

Is Apple working on a patch to the patch? Will the patch fix the audio issues or will I need to reimport all of the sync issue MiniDV imports?

I have a question for those here having audio sync problems like me. I have two versions of Quicktime on my machine .. Quicktime Player 7 and of course the latest version of Quicktime. I know that at the heart of all iMovie functions for video is Quicktime. In iMovie 6 for example, at time your audio would be muted for no reason at all. The fix was to go into Quicktime settings to select the proper audio codec that iMovie 6 operated from. Having noticed that I have both on my machine, I was wondering perhaps if there is a conflict in having the old Quicktime version on my machine. I use the older Quciktime to do a little bit of audio editing for the vows mp3 audio that I have.

    Just wondering.

See if it's in your Utilities folder. If not the QT7 player installer is on your Snow Leopard install disc.

The easy fix for this, at least temporarily, is to go to the App folder and erase iMovie. Then take the iLife 11 disc and rerun the installation. This will take you back to the 9.0 version of iMovie and voila, the sound exports in sync again. Just be careful not to upgrade iMovie when Software Update runs. I just finished testing this and everything seems to be working fine. Let's hope apple gets a fix out soon!

Unfortunately I replaced imovie 8.something with the 9.0.1 version from the new app store. So, I don't have a disc from which to reinstall. NOr do I have a copy of 9.0 in my time machine backups.

Anyone know where I can download a copy of iMovie 9.0?

A most excellent suggestion (for those of us with the original iLife '11 install DVD). I'll be going back to version 9.0 on my production machine and await update version 9.0.2 (or whatever they call this patch to a patch). There are days I don't see the obvious workaround around. Many thanks niagadenots!

I went back and tried iMovie 11 ver 9.0. (As someone had suggested, I pulled it out of my Time Machine backup).

While the audio sync issue is much better, there is still an audio lag even with iMovie 11 ver 9.0.

It is not as bad as iMovie 11 ver 9.01, but it is still there. I compared it to viewing the raw clip using Quicktime to confirm.

Ironically, if 9.01 hadn't been so bad, I may not have noticed the (lesser) lag in 9.0.

A quick question .. when you delete iMovie do all of your stored movies still exist when you do the reinstallation?

Another quick question. Is this 901 or 10.6.6 or 901 only on 10.6.6?

I stay with 10.6.5 because of Avid Media Composer.

Gahhh... I bought iMovie '11 through the App Store; 9.0.1 is what downloads. I'm really getting PO'd over this: I imported easily 15+ hours of old home videos through an ElGato EyeTV. Everything is fine; fine in Quicktime and VLC. iMovie? Forget it. I've been detaching the audio and re-aligning it, but the gap isn't fixed from clip to clip.

And to think I "upgraded" to '11 for the improved UI/experience.

I can confirm the earlier suggestion to revert back to iMovie 9.0. Just 20 minutes into what will be a roughly 2-hour video (I record the performances of the choir my daughter belongs to), video was several seconds out of sync in 9.0.1, whereas it's back to normal in 9.0. I also found that 9.0.1 was actually distorting the sound, as there were some background sounds like coughs that came out as horrible squealing / snapping sounds (like something metal just broke in two) in 9.0.1 that sound perfectly normal in 9.0.

I'm going to submit a notice to customer support for this issue as well, so there is one more voice in the call to fix this.

I have been having the same problem. Imported raw video from mini DV camera to imovie 11 and audio doesn't match. Thought it could be firewire cable. Did the same thing after 4 imports. Apple Care was unaware of problem and of no help. Extracted audio, but can't use precision editor to line up someone singing a song. I did not have this problem until I upgraded from imovie 09 to imovie 11. Please post if you have a solution.

I have the same problem — in a brand-new version of iMovie, from the App Store. Things got back in sync when I quit the program and re-strarted, but that's an inconvenient workaround. Is there a better solution? Thanks!

AppleCare helped me fix my problem by reinstalling iLife 11 WITHOUT the 9.01 update. I did not have to go back to iMovie 09... just 11 without the updates. It messes up your iphoto library when you do this, but its easy to reinstall that too. The audio syncs fine now with the video. My advice... let applecare walk you through the process to reinstall only the imovie and iphoto part. I didn't have to use time machine and did not lose any photos or video that I had imported. Hopefully, my case will help Apple come up with a solution to this.
