Jan 15, 2011 9:51 AM in response to Alan Dutton-Smithby steve_acp,I think trading standards would only get involved if you returned the product and apple refused a refund. I have always found their customer service to be excellent in that respect, so not sure if that on would fly. If only they would communicate their progress on fixing the bug.... -
Jan 15, 2011 10:01 AM in response to steve_acpby Coldfire,Yes, Apple's customer service will most likely oblige a refund. Otherwise, the story will get 100 times bigger with trading standards involved.
Maybe this is better...hmm. -
Jan 16, 2011 5:40 AM in response to Arcade99by Heimi,Same issue here. Bought an ATV2 last Saturday. Attached it to an Philips 42 PFL 8404 H/12 with latest Firmware. The color inversion came soon.
A switch to the HDMI Side Input seemed to cure the problem, but afther 2 hours it came back. Afther reading this thread I decided to return the Unit to the store where I bought it. -

Jan 17, 2011 6:21 PM in response to dwagner1270by ncalliari,Same issue with my ATV2 using HDMI and Optical. Previews work fine but as soon as I buy a movie I get an HDCP error.
What gives?!
Apple, please fix, this is unacceptable. -
Jan 18, 2011 2:42 AM in response to ncalliariby KeithJenner,This isn't the problem being discussed here. The HDCP error is something totally different and, if you look around this forum I think you are likely to be able to find a solution. -
Jan 18, 2011 2:46 AM in response to Alan Dutton-Smithby KeithJenner,Trading Standards will not get involved.
Apple do not guarantee that their equipment will work on all TV's and they offer refunds to anyone who has a problem.
They are also working on a solution (as far as we can tell, and that is what they would tell anyone from Trading Standards). What could Trading Standards do them? Tell them to fix it quicker?
Remember, lots of people say this is Apples problem because other equipment works with these TV's. Apple could demonstrate the same thing the other way round. It isn't as clear cut as people say. -
Jan 18, 2011 4:07 AM in response to KeithJennerby Millriver,Its clear cut to most of us here, ATV2 does not work correctly on lots of Philips & Sony TVs,
that's why I sent mine back and got a full refund! -
Jan 18, 2011 4:18 AM in response to Millriverby KeithJenner,Yes, that is very clear. It doesn't work on one of my TV's either. I never suggested otherwise. -
Jan 18, 2011 6:38 AM in response to Millriverby newagemac,I would say the problem is almost exclusively Philips TVs. Very few Sony TV are experiencing the problem as this thread indicates. I would say 90% or more of the posts refer to Phillips TVs. By the way, I have a Sony DLP TV that works perfectly fine with the Apple TV. -
Jan 18, 2011 6:45 AM in response to newagemacby Coldfire,List of Sony sets affected is on page 24, here:

Jan 18, 2011 7:44 AM in response to Millriverby tgibbs,It's a completely symmetrical situation. Apple TV works fine on most TVs, and the affected TVs work fine with most HDMI devices. So there is no way to know on which side the fault lies.
Nevertheless, the good news is that fact that the affected TVs work with other HDMI devices means that Apple ought to be able to find a workaround eventually, even if it is really the TV's fault.
The bad news is that HDMI/HDCP handshaking is incredibly complicated, and sporadic errors are the hardest kind to track down and debug. We've seen that here, where people have made changes in their configurations and reported the problem solved, only to report a day later that it is back. When it takes hours to test whether a potential fix did the trick, progress is very slow. -
Jan 18, 2011 4:56 PM in response to Arcade99by cbriffa,Like many here. I'm having this problem.
I've had four ATVs (two gen 1s and two gen 2s - yes I'm clearly a glutton for punishment!!) and they've all been plagued with HDMI/HDCP negotiation/handshake problems. I love the concept but Apple's implementation is a disgrace, quite frankly.
On the ATV gen 1, there is/was the ability to select the HDMI mode. Select the wrong mode and you end up with a screen that looks very much the same as screens that are being described here. My theory is that this is what's going on with the Gen 2. In Apple's infinite wisdom they didn't provide the manual override in gen 2.
Furthermore, whenever I do an update or restore of the gen 2, the HDMI initialisation works the first time. It's not until it's restarted or taken out of standby that the problem occurs for me.
I've reported this to Apple via their support line. When they start taking you through the usual BS of restore, blah, blah, blah, just cut them short, tell them it's a HDCP negotiation problem of which you'd like to place a detailed report with their engineering team.
What it comes down to is that Apple's implementation of HDMI/HDCP is poor and the more people that make them aware of that the better. FFS, I seem to spend more time chasing down BS issues and restoring my Apple devices than I do using them these days.
There is a disconnection between tech and engineering at Apple, so cut through the BS people and ask to speak to someone who's not reading off a checklist. -
Jan 19, 2011 10:25 AM in response to dwagner1270by MatsA,Has anyone tried HDMI switch to overcome the problem temporarily. Any success? In that case what did you use?

Jan 19, 2011 12:00 PM in response to MatsAby David in Sussex UK,i have exactly the same problem. reported to apple's flagship store in london today. they have, apparently, "never heard of it".
MatsA makes a very good point: is there a workaround via a switch?
