Q: HDMI Handshake problems every 20 - 30 minutes - Color Inversion Issue

Dear all,

I used the old ATV for a long time and never had problems with it. Yesterday my new ATV 2 arrived. The setup was very easy but after a few minutes a problem with HDMI Handshake occurred and repeats at least every 20-30 minutes:

I get a green screen for one or two seconds and then the picture appears again with some kind of inverted colors.

I use a Philips 40 inch 7664 LED LCD with the newest firmware installed.

Any idea what I could to to fix this issue?

Thanks

Has anyone tried HDMI switch to overcome the problem temporarily. Any success? In that case what did you use?

I run mine through a Yamaha RX-V3800 HDMI switching receiver. Whether it's directly connected or through the receiver the behavior is the same.

As people have mentioned previously, HDMI and in particular HDCP are horrendously complicated and often interpreted slightly differently from one manufacturer to the next.

I don't see why running it through a switch, especially if it's just a dumb switch, would/could make any difference. The switch simply relays the negotiation information from one device to another. A smart switch such as an upscaling receiver could conceivably make a difference but it makes none in my case.

I saw quite a few posts from people using switches in the following thread to attempt to solve, with limited success, a slightly different issue:

Well, someone from Apple is reading this thread. That would explain several posts on the Beta disappearing...

well then go on to avforums.com and post your findings on a ATV sub-forum. Quick - before this gets deleted.

Good news for all of us. Waiting time is over!!!

RGB rocks! 7 hours without a single color inversion

Nice one there - so when will this beta be released as public update for us suffering?

On the ATV gen 1, there is/was the ability to select the HDMI mode. Select the wrong mode and you end up with a screen that looks very much the same as screens that are being described here. My theory is that this is what's going on with the Gen 2. In Apple's infinite wisdom they didn't provide the manual override in gen 2.

As per my first post, I suspected as much. Let's hope they issue a new update with an override option or fix soon.

    Yes it still works!

Of course I don't have the time to watch the whole day cause I have to work, but if you think of it as a Zero Knowledge Proof
(the variations of use is the challenge and the color inversion is the wrong answer of the prover - the apple tv)
then the probability that the error is fixed (measured on the time I used the Apple TV since the update) is 99,90234375% . Which is not bad

Well that sounds promising. Now wait a second though... you want us to believe it works using a Zero-Knowledge-Proof? (Had to google that) And you didn't even watch the entire time?? Come on, if you really want to make sure at least pay someone to sit in front of it or something... Anywhoo... can't wait for the update to be available and with some luck we'll even have the multi-touch gestures that they have on the iPad

    (Disclaimer: I was just kidding)

I've never been more disappointed in an Apple product!

I've grown so accustomed to things just working that to see my picture totally foul up was a touch beyond upsetting.

Has anyone any further news on this latest beat that supposedly works. No creative mathematics now, either it does or it does not. Probability and stats are not admissible evidence
Any news on when it might reach the ignorant masses?

    Yours ignorantly,
    Disappointed Mac User

You're an owner of a Mac, so you understand that this is currently considered a ATV2 bug - just like an other bug in the OS or application. Latest iOS changes (in beta testing) indicates this is very likely to be fixed.

Beta testing of iOS system updates usually extends over a few weeks. The current version was not identified as a "release candidate," which means that Apple believes that more testing and debugging will be required prior to general release.
