I have been having problems where I find my iPhone battery has drained more quickly than normal, and I find it warmer than normal. Digging into it, I found that 'dataaccessd' and 'ReportCrash' are starting and stopping in the pid list. I am using a $2.99 iTunes Store program called System Activity Monitor to see the pids & CPU load. The CPU load is spiking every few seconds, which I guess correlates with the heat and battery drain.

I followed the recommendation below exactly with this afternoon's episode, and it is still running the processor and burning battery, looping through 'dataacessd' and 'ReportCrash' afterwards.

+Have you tried this simple tip?+

+1) Hit home button twice to bring up active applications+
+2) click and hold down mail until the red minus sign appears+
+3) click on the red minus sign to quit the application+
+4) hit the home screen and re-launch the mail application+

+This has always fixed my mail issues. Note restarting the phone does+
+not help, you need to do the above procedure.+

I also cycled power, and it came back up with dataaccessd still crashing & cycling with repetitive spiking CPU loads. I also turned 'push' off earlier today (Fetch New Data / Push -> Off), apparently with no effect.

I have the EAS profile installed per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398 with the DefaultEASTaskTimeout at 240. And it doesn't seem to matter whether the phone is on 3G or WiFi when this condition happens.

As usual, the "fix" was to delete my Exchange e-mail account and re-install it. After that, I don't see 'dataaccessd' and 'REportCrash' coming and going in the pid list. This "fix" works, but going through this procedure 3-4 times per week is getting old, not to mention the unpleasant surprise of finding my battery has unexpectedly drained when I need to use my device.

This is the first log entry (earliest) today at 13:39, when dataaccessd started crashing, before a slew of 4-6 entries per minute in the log directory on my Mac (after syncing) - see below.

Question - any ideas how to fix this ? It was happening before the latest iOS upgrades so I don't think the standard "reload the os" answer is the fix....

i've same problems with the iphone from my girlfriend.
she had the ios version 4.2.1 and one exchange account. We disable only the contact sync, now it seems to be done. i think it is a 'old' problem, beginning with ios 3. thrus every update and backup syncing.
i don't think it is the right way, but i'm searching for the real problem. So i will responde here, when i found the problem.

I had never experienced the issues until moving to 4.2.1. This is becoming a major pain to have to delete my exchange account every few days and then re-add. Hopefully Apple will fix this soon but it doesn't even seem they even think there is a problem.

I'm having the same issues. I've had the setup with Exchange Active Sync for 10 months with no troubles on an iPhone 3GS and last weekend, I started experiencing the hot phone and rapid battery drain. I visited the Genius Bar and the "fix" was to restore the phone and start from scratch. After doing that and a full charge, the problem quickly returned. I've tried "push" and "timed sync", neither seems to change things. I returned to the Genius Bar a second time and they replaced my device. Seemed OK for a few hours...and then the same problem returned. On my third trip to the Genius Bar, someone told me I needed to delete and re-add my Exchange account. The problem still continues. Hopefully this is widespread enough that Apple will help find a fix.

bmorganapple, I am having the same issue on my 3GS iOS4.2.1
I visited the Genius bar tonight and they said to turn off Push.
All other obvious stuff is good (off).
Really hoping they figure out what is up and issue a fix.

I just started having this issue last week on my 3GS with iOS 4.2.1. I am also finding that applications are crashing a lot and randomly. (My iPad is also having the crashing issue, but the battery is fine). I will try calling Apple and see if they say anything else.

Just to follow up...taking the exchange account out worked. I have added it back and so far battery life seems to be back to normal and fewer random crashes. I wonder if some Exchange Server patch just came out and is causing this?

dataaccessed crashing repeatedly here as well, only when syncing with Exchange Calendar, regardless of push/fetch setting. Disabling calendar on this account stops the crashes. Re-creating account doesn't help. Problems started 2 days ago. More info on the crash from iPhone console below, collected using Configuration Utility, in case it can help someone. I suppose Apple automatically receives crash dumps for their own applications through iTunes ?

Apple has posted this fix, which has been wprking for me for 6 hours now:
    http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECARE_ALLGEOS/TS3398/SignedDefault EASTaskTimeout.mobileconfig

I believe the posted fix changes the internal setting for how long the iPhone will try to connect to Exchange before giving up. The value is changed to 240, which I hope is not in seconds.

I have an iPhone 3GS that kept trying and trying and trying to connect to Exchange. It would get hot and kill the battery in 2-4 hours. Delete Exchange account, no problem. Turning off push helped for a week, then the problem occurred again even with push off. I bought a iPhone 4 (AT&T), same problem. Went back to the 3GS, starting with no apps and factory settings for the 3rd time, same problem.

I was suffering from this phenomenon with my 2g iphone for a very long time.

There is no fix for this...(Even in iOS 5), but in order to avoid it you either turn off push for your exchange account or just delete all your reoccurence meetings from your exhange calendar account.

Has anyone had this problem recently?  Last week my barely a year old 3GS started running hot and would not hold a charge.  I've been to the Genius Bar 3 times, but nothing has worked.  I've tried restoring the phone, but it continues to run hot, especially when it is charging.  When I was at the Genius Bar today, I was told it is a battery problem, though last week they told me my battery was fine.  Anyone else find you get a different answer every time?  Feeling frustrated and don't want to buy a new phone.

yes janeewalk, it happens to me since some days now. Latest iOS, iPhone 3GS. This is the first time since I own my 3GS.

  • 13. Re: iPhone hot, Battery draining fast, dataaccessd crashing repeatedly

For me it was linked to an incorrectly configured caldav account...

  • 14. Re: iPhone hot, Battery draining fast, dataaccessd crashing repeatedly
    ZZamboni Level 1 Level 1 (10 points)

I had this problem since updating to iOS 5.1, and the cause was also a CalDAV account. However, this account had been working correctly before, so I guess there must have been a change in how iOS 5.1 processes the CalDAV protocol, which is now causing things to crash with my particular CalDAV server.
