I have contacts in Address Book on a MacBook Pro, and I sync through MobileMe with an iPhone 4 and an iPad. So I'm safely in the Apple universe.

I deleted a bunch of contacts from my Address Book. I synced with MobileMe and the Contacts apps in both mobile devices were properly updated. Then I plugged both devices (one at a time) into the MacBook to backup, transfer photos, etc., and I noticed that all of my deleted contacts had reappeared, destroying several hours' work. Any idea why that is? Since I sync all devices through MobileMe, the sync settings when the devices are plugged in do not include syncing Address Book contacts - that box is unchecked.

If a contact is deleted from Address Book, does not appear in, and does not appear on either mobile device - why would it reappear when I hard sync either device? Or could it be something else entirely that's causing the problem (something with MobileMe, perhaps?)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Dear dml92104,

    I just posted this:

"I have done this before wrong, and need to be taught how to do it right:

I cleaned up my address book on my iMac, deleting old contacts, duplicates and etc. and then synced my new iphone4 after. All is well on the iphone.

My husband just got an ipad as a gift and our itunes asked if we wanted to restore the ipad from one we had set up before the address book clean up. I said yes.

Now, my address book on the iMac has all of the old contacts again.

How can I sync the address book from the iphone4 back one way to the computer? If I plug in the iphone to the iMac's itunes, it will automatically sync the address book according to the preferences set the LAST time i synced the iphone, right? Which will replace all of the contacts on the iphone?

I had done this same dance with 2 different ipod touch devices.

Yes I have time machine but my EXD was disconnected for the past month. Lazy. We have Mozy also if it comes to that.

Thanks for your help in advance and please be gentle with me this issue is something I can't figure out no matter how many times I go wrong."

Now that I've read your post, and a few others, and posted this, I'm thinking back on all of the syncs I have done in the past when my deleted contacts have reappeared. I see that you haven't gotten any answers yet, I'm wondering if you figured anything else out re this or if it is a bug, glitch, ghost. I have to say I am really tired of seeing phone numbers for my brother that I have deleted several times, phone numbers I know are wrong, years old, deleted again and again. Not to mention the numbers for people that I am not sure are right or wrong.

I had a similar problem with old, delected contacts reappearing on my ipad after a "hard" (USB) sync with my imac.  I found that removing a file called "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" solved the problem.  The computer created another during the next sync.  The file is located at User/"username"/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook/.

When syncing after removing this file, go to itune/ipad/info tab, check "contacts" under "advanced" at the bottom of the page.

Hope this works for you.  It was very frustrating at this end.
