Q: Unlit display -- inverter or LCD itself?

Hey folks --

Had problems with an unlit display; I'm hoping that just popping a new inverter in will take care of it, but is there any way to confirm that before buying one? Are there any tell-tale signs which will distinguish one from the other?

A:

Usually, a bad inverter or display cabling only affects the internal display. If an external display works, then it's a good indication that you have properly diagnosed the issue.

It may also be worth taking a close look at the inverter cable--it could be damaged, especially where it goes through the hinge. I don't know of a way to tell whether it's the inverter or the display unless you can spot some physical damage on the inverter itself.

Hey folks -- thanks both. I had confirmed that there was no damage to the wiring, so I took a chance and went ahead and ordered an inverter; it should arrive today.

BUT I also just confirmed that an external display works fine -- so, fingers crossed!

Hi,
I have had a problem where my blacks on my MBP show up with red vertical lines. Apple store connected my computer to an external monitor and it looked great. They told me that I needed a new LCD. I just installed it and I have the same problem. Soooooo, did you get the fix after you installed your inverter>?

Unfortunately, it did not. I ended up pulling the display top and using the machine as a desktop. :-\
