Q: Frequent Crashes while playing World of Warcraft

Hi everyone,

I've been having alot of problems recently while playing World of Warcraft. The game will frequently crash to a black screen and the sound will loop in the background. this issue has also happened with normal usage when i connect an external monitor to my macbook pro. below is the most recent kernal panic report. i would appreciate any help or advice in regards to the crashes. thanks!

    Hi,

I'm having the very same problem with my MBP6,2. I had nothing of this kind during the last half a year, neither with 10.6.4 or 10.6.5, but right the very next day I've updated to 10.6.6 these weird freezes started happening. It doesn't depend on if I am running WoW or not - twice it froze right after the login screen, once during login, once it froze even in safe boot mode! Anyways, right after update to 10.6.6 it froze 13 times during first 6 hours...

I've tried rolling back to backups from 10.6.5, 10.6.4 - still the same problem, which makes me think it's only a mere coincidence that it started with 10.6.6..

The log is similar to yours:

    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x9fabfa): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xc0000000 0x7fc23000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P0/4

More food for thought: I've tried clean backups of 10.6.5 and 6.4, back at that time I had no such problems with freezes, it still froze several times and once even in safe boot mode.

I thought it might be a problem with overheating, installed smcFanControl and forced fans to 5krpm-s, so far so good - it doesn't seem to crash with that. I'll still drop by the local Apple Store to talk to the experts. Who knows, may be thermal paste on the GPU/CPU should be reapplied anew or something like that?...

I'm having the same problem here...except it's been happening since 10.6.5 for me. 10.6.4 will run just fine without any freezing/crashing.

Please let us know what they tell you at Apple. I'm still trying to get my hands on an external drive large enough to backup my MBP before I take it to Apple.

Having same "kernel crash" problems on MacBookPro5,1 since last November (screen goes black and sound loops a while, then I have to do a hard reset/reboot). Have posted on Blizzard Mac forum. It was working with "Better battery life" Energy Saver setting (this uses lesser graphics card), but recently it started having WOW crashes in this setting: twice in 30 minutes.
I think the Nvidia card or its drivers are munged.

I get the exact same message. I want this resolved! Please let me know what to do if you find out. Obviously that's only done by me checking here but i hope Apple figures this out because it's really annoying me! One day i had it crash on me like, at least 13 times. I have no idea what it is.

    Hi,

My MBP is crashing very often (once a day) Of course when that happens I lose whatever I am doing.

In all cases it has happened using different applications and it is related to com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.2.6)

Should I take it to the technical service? Did any of you found out a work around?

    Thanks!

I think I will need to head to the techies right away. Another crash (two in less than an hour) This time again nvidea but on top of the stacktrace now it appears com.apple.GeForce(6.2.6) ... clearly video related I would say.

For the record here is the important bits from the stacktrace

Same thing happened to me after I started installing WOW 3 months ago. I am using a 2010 April Macbook Pro and seems like the performance standard is way lower than expectation. I was previously using the 2006 Macbook 13.3" and it has probably served me better.

As of last week, I am unable to even start the game without the display turning black and the sound looping in the background. So I've been forced to hard reset each time.

I've searched many forums and there's indication that this might be caused by the 'Automatic Graphics Switching' found in Energy Saving Preferences. Apparently it is defaulted to 'on' and its basically to help save battery life based on graphic performances type used during lower required applications like mail, words etc.

Here's an article I found - hope this helps you as well: http://www.displaylink.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-508.html

I'm also giving it another week before I bring my Macbook to Apple to rectify and resolve this issue.

    Sigh.

I think i found out the problem all! After many phone calls with Apple, me and one man who was extremely helpful helped me figure out the problem! It has to do with the .plist's in your Library>Preferences folder. You have to delete all the .plist files that HAVE TO DO WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT! NO OTHER FILES! Once you delete this, this may cause a couple settings in wow to be reset, but thats okay, u can re-adjust it all later. After you delete them... or rather, just put them on the desktop that way incase it does not work you can put them back... Then restart your computer. Then launch wow and start playing. This SHOULD fix the problem. it did for me. Once you can confirm that the .plists were the problem, you can trash them, and there you go Hope this works for you all!
