Q: Manage my places problem

places is great feature since I know it from the past. However, when I click on Windows-Manage my places, there is a list of places I've created. However, most of them are there multiply (10, 20, 30 times). It seems like it's a list of places of each picture? Why is that? I usually click on even, assign one place, so why there is not the place just one time?

I don't have iPhoto '11 yet, so clearly I am just speculating here. But when you assign a place you also assign a circle around that place and you can set the size of that circle. Then if you add new photo, if their geodata or you place them on the map within an existing place circle, it gets added to that place. If it is outside the circle, it is a new place. So perhaps you have multiple "place circles" with the same name so they appear multiple times?

If that is the case, try selecting one of those multiple places that is central the all of them, then widen the circle to be much bigger and see if the duplicates get "absorbed" into the one place marker with the big circle.

    Hi PT,

thanks for reply, however, it doesn't help. I've tried to resize the circle, but nothing happened. Actually all the other places (with the same name and position) have changed the circe too.
It seems like if I set the place to some event, it creates that many places as many pictures is in the event. So If I have 20 pictures in the event, it creates 20 absolutely same places in there instead of one.

I'm in the same boat. If I remove Places information from every photo and attempt to go through all of the 5000 pictures I have, iPhoto still remembers every location from before and duplicates it every time I try to assign a new location to the photos.

In other words, I have 9 names listed that are the same location with the same pictures with no feasible way to remove all but one of the names. Let's hope a fix gets put out or someone works some magic and can reveal a trick to solve everything.

As I have the same problem I try to "re-activate" this thread. I was hoping that the latest update of iPhoto was going to solve this but unfortunately it didn't. Doesn't anyone have an idea what could be casing this? I've searched the internet for a solution with no luck

I'm with you there.. just trying to feel my way around iPhoto 11 and finding places to be extremely frustrating!

I would like to delete Places information in iPhoto and start again, but that doesn't seem to be possible. Neither is it possible to set location in the small window by, for example clicking on the small map until one arrives at the desired spot, and Google isn't finding the location I want to add, or its putting it in the North Atlantic...

    Grrr!

I think I found scenario how to replicate the issue.

    1) Import 10 photos to new event
    2) Select the event in "Events" view
    3) Display info for that event
    4) In "Assign a Place..." enter new place which does not exist in iPhoto yet and apply it
    5) Open item "Manage My Places" of menu "Window"
    6) See that the new place will be present in the list 10 times (the count equals to number of photos)

    This is quite annoying bug...

Is there a way how to report this behavior to developers?

What a frustrating feature of iPhoto places really is.

I have got to the stage where I have deleted all of the places that I had tagged to photos.

The problem I have now is that I have over 100 entries in Manage my Places for the same place and clicking on the red circle to delete them does absolutely nothing. They seem to me stuck there. How can I remove them?

Any help would really be appreciated. Thank you.

In the Manage My Places window when you select a Place on the left you'll see a wee delete option on the same line, to the right of the word. Click on that.

Thanks for the tip Terence. Its almost impossible to see that 'delete' button.

I have managed to sort out my Places after discovering it IS possible to rename a place on the small map window simply by selecting and editing the title name!

Here's a way that might remove the previous places so you can start anew:

1 - make a temporary backup of the iPhoto Library.
2 - open the iPhoto Library package like this:

2 - locate the folder titled "Places" which is inside the Database folder.
3 - move the contents of that folder to a folder on the Desktop.
4 - close the package, launch iPhoto and try adding places again.

If the above doesn't help; you can either move the places files back into the Places folder to revert to the backup copy of the library that you made.

    Hi Terence

    Thanks for trying to help.

i presume the wee button you are referring to is the red circular no entry sign. When I click on this to delete the offending place it brings up a window asking me if I want to delete the place and after confirming that I do nothing happens and the place remains in Manage my Places. I now have something like 100 entries in Manage my Places for Krakow which is a little frustrating.

Any suggestions on how to remove them would be very much appreciated.

I have moved the Places file from the iPhoto library to the desktop and this doesn't rectify the problem either. Is there an offending Preference file that I need to trash?

That's good, new information. If the use of that circle is explained anywhere, I sure haven't found it. The Help is useless. It's not easy to change the size of the circles, but it can be done.

I have had the opposite problem: Places that I want to be independent keep merging in strange and unwanted ways. I need to shrink those circles and see if that solves my problem.

I really, really dislike this latest version of iPhoto. Don't "up"grade if you can avoid it.

    same problem as Daniel.
Except I have places duplicated THOUSANDS of times. I love iPhoto but this bug is ridiculous and makes the product impossible to use. It hangs indefinitely whenever I'm dealing with places and I have to force quit it every 5 min of use (I guess it's trying to relate the thousands of places to photos).
I tried deleting one place at a time (painful), and after I delete 100 or so the app hangs
This is really ridiculous. I hope there's a fix soon, as right now I can barely launch the app.
OR AT LEAST IF THERE WAS AN OPTION TO WIPE OUT PLACE DATA to start over, it might salvage my library. Maybe this places data is corrupt or something.

Hi there. I'm having the same problem as you guys. I really hope, Apple will fix this issue. Geotagging photos is a great feature, but it's poorly implemented here...
