Hope someone can help me, new to the mac and my wife keeps getting a midi timeout error message every time she launches garageband in her account on the mac. It works fine for me on my account and in the guest account, but she is unable to use it. We don't have any midi devices connected. Have tried a few things deleting pref files etc but no joy. Anyone any ideas. Thanks

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.6.6), 27" Quad Core

Exactly the same issue here. Reinstalling didn't change a thing.

I have been having this issue for at least a year now. I have tried everything - EVERYTHING - multiple times, but nothing seems to work.

Here's an abridged list of the things I've tried:
    - Delete all MIDI drivers in the system folder
    - Delete all devices in the MIDI Configuration application
    - Delete GarageBand preferences
    - Delete GarageBand application support data
    - Delete every file with "GarageBand" anywhere near its filename
    - Reinstall GarageBand
    - Delete all of GarageBand and install from scratch
    - Install updated M-Audio MIDI drivers because someone said it helped
...and a whole bunch of other stuff.

The end result of all this? Still can't use the **** thing. At least - thanks to your post - now I know that this problem is specific to the user account.

Was able to fix this by deleting the user account and recreating it. Took a bit of work backing up mail files and documents/music photos etc.. but it now works and the wife is happy.

I just installed GarageBand '11. It runs fine on my account or a new account, but not on my son's account -- he's getting the "MIDI timeout error." I would rather not have to delete and recreate his account, so I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution short of that. A possible clue: In the console log, at the end of the initialization he gets the following:

    GarageBand: Binary store save failed.

If he tries to start a new project he starts getting the MIDI timeout error dialogs and a series of errors in the console log, each reading:

Sequencer engine timed out after 800 milliseconds

Obviously something is wrong in his account, but I can't figure out what it is. Anyone have any ideas?

I recently got a mac and im new to it i just started jusing garageband and after a week i got the following message : GarageBand has detected a MIDI timeout. Please restart your computer, then relaunch GarageBand. If the problem persists, update the drivers of all connected MIDI devices (including audio drivers with MIDI functionality) to the latest version. Now i have no idea what drivers they are talking about because i have no midi devices hooked up to my laptop i went to audio midi setup and everything was at default settings so i dont know what to do if anyone knows a way around this problem without having to recreate your user im all ears

    I had the same problem.

I tried to install an old M-Box and used a very bad driver. Since then:

GarageBand has detected a MIDItimeout. Please restart your computer, then relaunch Gar...

I deleted all the digidesign, M-Audio ....  Midid Drivers in the Library/Audio/Midi Drivers

(beware of deleting library stuff, you should know what you delet)

    Now its ok.

    happy!

I did what kladisaid and it worked.

so probably the problem is caused by a midi driver installed in the computer. check your midi drivers installed, that may be the problem.

Where do you find this library?

Library/Audio/Midi Drivers    Where do you find this library?

There are two places to look for the drivers:

    1. The System Library: /Library/Audio/Midi Drivers
    2. Your User Library: ~/Library/Audio/Midi Drivers

If you are using Lion, your User Library will be hidden by default; to reveal it in the Finder use the Finder's "Go" menu: Select "Go" from the menu, and hold down the "options⌥" key, until the library appears in the drop-down menu. Then select it and click it to open it in the Finder.

To reveal the System Library open the "Library" folder on the top level of your System Volume, or again use the Finder's "Go" menu:

         Go > Go to Folder

    then enter: /Library/Audio

    Regards

    Léonie

WARNING TO OTHER mbox2 owners, won't work with Lion period! AVID has NO drivers for this OS, I found out the hard way. If you need something similar and reasonably priced, try the iU2 by Tascam $149 and no drivers required. It also comes with an iPad/iPhone connector which I tried with my iPad & Twisted Wave, DAW and AmpKit..worked great and was very quiet!

Woo Hoo!, there were no files in the user library, but there were three in the system library which I deleted, now Garageband is back to normal
