Mar 6, 2011 1:47 AM in response to Risen Soldierby gothminion,I found that simply ticking the "Prevent iPhones, iPods and iPads from syncing automatically" option helped. -
Mar 25, 2011 5:52 PM in response to Risen Soldierby hevnztrash,If you are using a 5th gen iPod with Windows7, this solution was very helpful for me:
http://www.computerpartsgreenvillesc.com/windows-7/windows-7-problems-how-to-tur n-off-windows-7-terminal-services/
if you have limited experience running "rededit", BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!! you can seriously alter your OS with this. do exactly as directed from the link and nothing more! -
Mar 30, 2011 9:04 PM in response to Risen Soldierby temanjena,Tried each of the various 'solutions' listed and none work. Have had no problems with two other IPod touches -- just the one that belongs to my daughter!! Tried removing everything from the IPOD -- ITunes still does not find the device. Tried uninstalling ITunes -- no joy. Turned off the computer and back on first without the IPOD attached and then with it attached -- still does not work. If I disconnect the IPOD, ITUNES immediately becomes active; hook the device back up and ITUNES freezes again. Got a call in for support help but based on what I have read so far, figure I will be taking this back and seeing about a replacement. -
Apr 12, 2011 1:41 PM in response to Risen Soldierby ghartler,I finally gave in and did RESTORE. It downloaded new software & seems to be syncing now. We'll see how it goes! -
Apr 12, 2011 3:32 PM in response to ghartlerby ghartler,After I RESTORED the sync was virtually flawless; however it looked like my PLAYLISTS didn't sync. Tried to do it manually and got no response. Tried to resync and the "Starting sync/determining tracks" froze AGAIN!
I deleted the ONE video I had imported in iPad format and am trying the RESTORE/SYNC again. -
Apr 17, 2011 10:13 AM in response to Risen Soldierby King92,For people still having issues with iTunes freezing when their iPhone (iPod) is connected, I think I may have found a solution.
I read Apples FAQ Database page where they try to help you stop the freezing problem. Anyway, after follow all the tips listed I didn't make any progress. So that's when I decided to start disabling groups of services in MSConfig (MSConfig.exe). After many many restarts I finally found the culprit (I believe).
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service
After I disabled this service, connecting my iPhone works almost every time. It still freezes once in a while, but it works by far the majority of the time. I'm not sure if this is a fix or just a work-a-round since it doesn't totally fix it, but hopefully this helps some people.
Please respond and inform me if this works for others.
Note: I'm running Win 7 Ult x64

May 3, 2011 9:30 AM in response to King92by deepinsight,Yo,
Have an ipod classic 60Gb which would connect and sync fine with itunes 10.2.2.12 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, but whenever I connect my itouch v4.2.1 itunes would freeze and un-freeze when I disconneced it.
I disbaled the BITS service via msconfig and itunes works fine with the itouch and the ipod.
Thanks for the tip King92 !!

May 3, 2011 9:34 AM in response to deepinsightby deepinsight,As a quick PostScript, the itocuh still freezes itunes if connecte via a USB hub, but it's fine when connected directly to the PC. The ipod isn't affected by this behaviour.

May 28, 2011 6:37 PM in response to King92by Capricorn1!,BITS is not a good thing to disable. Or at least, not a good thing to leave disabled. Microsoft/Windows Update use it to download Windows update files. You may not be able to get all (or any) updates with that service disabled. I believe Microsoft Security Essentials also uses it to fetch update virus signature files. (Only important if you use Microsoft Security Essentials, of course.)
Unchecking the check box labeled Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically seems to be working for me. It's found in Edit (menu) -> Peferences -> Devices (tab/button). After that, the phone appears in the left pane. It seems like it starts to sync, but stops before really progressing. To sync the iPhone manually, click on the iPhone in the list and press the Sync button that appears in the lower right portion of iTunes.

May 29, 2011 1:52 PM in response to mamalydsby philfromottawa,Try completely turning off your iPod. Once it is off, then turn it back on. It seems as though there may be a software flaw that puts the iPod into a state where it will not complete the handshake with iTunes. Cycling the power in this way seems to clear it up.
I hope this helps some people having this problem.

Jun 1, 2011 11:33 PM in response to philfromottawaby gonzzo410,I had the same Problem (iTunes freezes on iPhone connect) and found my solution.
This applies for Windows 7 64 bit SP1 (could word for 32bit also). My problem was SP1. You have to start iTunes in compatibility mode "Windows 7".
Log in as administrator, go to iTunes installation folder (c:/program files (x86)/iTunes), right click on iTunes.exe, go to the "compatibilty" tab, set compatibility for all users (button on the butom) and chek compatibility mode "windows 7". No freeze, fast Sync asit should be!!!
Tell me if this helped!

Jun 2, 2011 7:43 AM in response to gonzzo410by jjpeabody,Under Windows 7 64 bit SP1, iTunes was freezing / locking up when an iPhone 4 or iPad 2 was connected. Following the advice of gonzzo410, setting iTunes to run in compatibility mode as "Windows 7" solved this problem for me as well. Hopefully a future Windows or iTunes update will resolve this issue.
