Q: Flicker after updating (post your details)

There are a large number of instances of users experiencing flicker after installing the latest (4.2) update.

Rob (one of our hosts) asked if those with the issue would post the make and model of TV used with the Apple TV in instances where this occurs.

Possibly because his post was half way down the thread, not everyone has posted these details. Hopefully I'm not treading on toes, but can I suggest you post those details here.

You may also want to include information as to whether your tv supports 1080i or 720p or both, as well as whether your Apple tv is connected directly to the tv or through a converter, switch, receiver or HDMI to DVI connector for example. Additionally if your tv displays details of the resolution and frequency of the signal it is receiving you might want to post those details too.

MP 2 x QC Xeon 3 Ghz, 12 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Also have the flickering issue. TV is a CRT HDTV Samsung TXP2670W 1080i with DVI input. ATV2 reports TV as being 480p display and can't change the output. TV supports 1080i, 720p and 480p inputs.

Only happening since the 4.2 update today.

I have a Panasonic PT-47x54 CRT rear projection TV (about 6 yrs old). It supports 1080i and displays in 480p with the ATV2. It's connected directly by HDMI. Everything worked perfectly until today's update. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by another software update. Thanks.

Panasonic PT-47X-54J 1080i rear projection supports 480p, not 720p. Connected via Sony STR-DN1000 HDMI switching home theatre system. Previous Apple TV update resolved irritating screen flicker/shimmy. Today's 4.2 update made it completely unwatchable, severe flicker and continuous signal loss with no picture whatsoever. Tried restore, didn't help. Tried cycling HDMI settings in new menu, didn't help. Without another software update the Apple TV is rendered completely useless with 4.2.

I am also having a video flicker problem. My TV is a Sony Wega 42" (KE-42TS2U) connected to the AppleTV using a DVI-HDMI cable. My TV supports 720p and 1080i, but the only output I ever get is 480p. The new HDMI Output setting only allows me to select "Auto".

I was under the belief that the Apple TV 2 only supported 720p outputs. Thus, I'm wondering how it even worked with TVs that didn't support 720p? As far as I know, 480p and 1080i should never have worked in the first place.

    Summary:
After updating to iOS 4.2 the TV flickers
Apple TV 2 connected to SONY Multi-Channel AV STR-HD500 through HDMI (a Mac Mini also connected to the HDMI switch; no other devices connected)
AV connects to TV SONY WEGA KF-50WE620 (TV's DVI IN connected to amplifier's HDMI OUT through a DVI/HDMI cable)

    ATV2-----HDMI---------HDMI--|
    MacMini--MiniDisplay-----HDMI--STR-HD500--HDMI------DVI--KF-50WE620

Everything worked with the previous version (after the release 4.1.1; prior to that, the "wobbling" problem)

    Steps to Reproduce:
It flickers all the time; every 1 second or so; resets screen from time to time too -- irregular intervals of several seconds

TV is a Panasonic CT-34WX54. Supports 1080i but not 720p and has HDMI input. Worked fine with old firmware but flickers ever couple of seconds now.

You and I have a similar setup -- I've also got a DVI-HDMI connector -- max resolution on the TV is 1080i and it should be set to auto. Needless to say, I won't be using my ATV2 for awhile.
