All iPhones sold in the USA are locked to AT&T or Verizon. What you bought was a hacked phone and when you updated it, it relocked it, most likely to AT&T.

There's nothing anyone here can do for you.

Unfortunately model and serial numbers, regardless of where you bought it are no indication if its locked or not. It was clearly a hacked phone which there is not much you can do about as I do not believe carriers in the US will unlock it for you for any reason.

You are not speaking to Apple here. This is a user to user forum only.

No unlocked iPhones are sold officially in the US and Apple do not unlock iPhones without being requested to by the network to which the phone is locked.

There is no such thing as iphone that is unlocked from any U.S models. As was mentioned, all U.S models are carrier locked to AT&T and no way of unlocking them. Where did you purchase your iphone from? If from a third party seller, then it could have been hacked, and thus when you update the phone, it locks it self back.

I purchased an unlocked iPhone 4 from the Apple Store in Calgary, AB, Canada and when I installed the 4.3 update it locked my handset to my carrier....I think this is an issue with the 4.3 update itself as I spent 45 minutes on the phone with a representative from Apple who forwarded my info onto the "appropriate department". I am still waiting to hear back from them...

Your problem has nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's problem. The OP purchased an iPhone in the U.S. where the iPhone is not sold as officially unlocked.

Click the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of this page.

There is nothing that can be done. All U.S. iphones are carrier locked and CANNOT be unlocked.

    Sorry.

If you managed to purchase an unlocked iphone 4, then it couldn't have been from an apple store. There are some small electronics stores that sell unlocked iphones but I am pretty sure that this is illegal (I also think there are some on amazon).

If you do indeed have an unlocked iphone 4 running on a network other than AT&T or Verizon and were running the ios 4.2.1 (The operating system for the iphone 4 prior to the new ios 4.3 update from a few weeks ago), then your iphone would have to have been jailbroken in order to receive service from a provider other than AT&T or Verizon. I am not 100% sure of this but from my understanding of jailbreaks and unlocks, this is the case. If you were using an unlocked and jailbroken iphone 4 on ios 4.2.1, then updating your phone to 4.3 would unjailbreak it and therefore disable service from your unauthorized provider (Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.). If you wanted to run an unlocked iphone 4 on ios 4.3 then you should have restored your iphone, updated to 4.3, jailbroken on 4.3 (I do not know if any stable 4.3 jailbreaks are available), and then unlocked your phone (i know nothing about this step).

If you want to use an unlocked iphone 4, then I would suggest that you consult someone knowledgeable on the subject to help you return your iphone to 4.2.1 and just unlock it on that ios.
Again, from what i know unlocks are somewhat illegal and i do not recommend doing so. I would also like to reiterate that i have not participated in any of these jailbreaking practices.

I hope this helps you out.

Wow... good job digging up a year old thread.

Certainly you could have found a more recent thread to add your pointless comment to.

I'm going to guess that you're somehow affiliated with this "itools 2012"... shameless self promotion.

I am so confused on all this personally my iphone has worked perfectly up until a week ago. I had major surgery and will be down for at least two weeks and asked my feonce to bring my iphone to me.  I do not talk on it due to the ridiculous prices that AT&T and Verizon charge. ( I do have a cell phone just through a different company) However, I had a plan with the company for my two years, which ran out in March, and I now own my IPHONE. Last Wednesday I tried to turn it on and it said disabled for 22,281,046 minutes which turns out to be in my disoriented calculations about 42 YEARS,  so of course my first call was to the carrier who said I own the phone it is unlocked and I should have no problem with it....HAHAHA!  Who tells me to bring it down like I have nothing better to do than lie. Well I can't go anywhere so my feonce takes it down with all the paperwork and comes back with a note from them that says they dont understand try rebooting it on itunes. So i do, three times, that didnt work I called back they said it had to be a problem on your part then. So I decide ok well I can get on my laptop and get the answer and this is what I see.... so PLEASE tell me what I am supposed to do. I would really appreciate you not getting cocky with me like you have with everyone else. I understand this is the carriers problem that is why I went straight to them, and I will be calling them again tomorrow but I have a feeling this will just be a battle between them blaming you and you blaming them and I am out of a lot of money for nothing and all I want is to be able to use my calander on it now and listen to my music rather than buying a brand new ipod....................PLZ TELL ME YOU CAN HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! THANKS
