Q: Flicker after updating (post your details)

There are a large number of instances of users experiencing flicker after installing the latest (4.2) update.

Rob (one of our hosts) asked if those with the issue would post the make and model of TV used with the Apple TV in instances where this occurs.

Possibly because his post was half way down the thread, not everyone has posted these details. Hopefully I'm not treading on toes, but can I suggest you post those details here.

You may also want to include information as to whether your tv supports 1080i or 720p or both, as well as whether your Apple tv is connected directly to the tv or through a converter, switch, receiver or HDMI to DVI connector for example. Additionally if your tv displays details of the resolution and frequency of the signal it is receiving you might want to post those details too.

Same flickering problem here unfortunately. My have a Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection TV model KF-50WE610. I'm connected via an HDMI Adapter and my HDMI setting is set to Auto. I've tried resetting ATV with it connected to the TV AND unconnected...no help! Worked fine before the update, but not the flickering happens every other second.

TV Model: Sony Grand WEGA KF-50WE620 (55in) Using DVI-HDTV connection.
    (User Manual at: www.docs.sony.com/release/KF50WE620.pdf )

Same "flicker" effect every second or so, with the video resetting every couple flickers.

Connection: HDMI to DVI cable (direct to TV)

NOTE: This configuration worked for nearly a year prior to the latest software update, despite it not being 'supported' by Apple.

+1 for flicker problem after updating yesterday. ATV2 has worked just fine for months before this.

Set up: Sony WEGA FD Trinitron XBR KV-34XBR800 connected via DVI on TV and HDMI on ATV2; Optical sound direct to Tuner.

Consistent flicker every second or two, with what seems like a complete video drop (reset?) periodically - I can see my TV screen telling me I'm using 'Video 7' for my ATV2.

Tried to reset the ATV and go back, but the firmware just updates during the process - so much for original default settings.

Sure be nice to get a fix soon.

I am experiencing the same intermittent video drop out after upgrading to the new APTV 2 4.2 (2060) software. My TV set is a **Sony Grand Wega KF-50WE610*. Apple TV HDMI plugs via a DVI to HDMI adapter.
I have no control over the HDMI output, it defers to AUTO when pressed.
OK Apple, fix the problem. This shouldn't take to long seeing that your previous version worked! Back engineer and be franc with your customers regarding this issue.

I have the same problem, before the software update ATV2 was working well, now with the update AV2 is not viewable at all due to the flickering.
My TV Model: Sony Grand WEGA KF-42WE620 (42in) Using DVI-HDTV connection.

I spent an hour with Apple support this morning, and they advised there is not much they can do. They can only provide support to users with a direct HDMI connection to the TV. The irony of this is that in reviewing the Apple Discussion board, the flickering problem is also being encountered with direct HDMI users. So clearly, this is a software glitch.

In summary, the ATV2 becomes an expensive paper weight? I am looking the option of connecting ATV2 to my TV with an HDMI to component cable connector. Has anyone tried this solution? Thanks

Having done the update to 4.2, device does not show picture nor sound anymore. Used to work fine with 4.1 !!
Setup: ATV2 via HDMI on Sony AV-Receiver and via HDMI/DVI on Siemens-Plasma 42"
After booting, TV shows Apple Logo for 5 secs, then disappears, TV showing "no input", no sound on AV Receiver neighter.
Any solution or update in sight?
    Thanks, Chris

I also have AppTv2 with a sony grand wega HDMI to DVI.

Apple says that they can't fix this issue because they don't support DVI? If you look into the setup instructions it shows how to connect via DVI so of course they support DVI. It has worked since I received this for Christmas 2010. The latest update I installed on Sat March 12 has rendered this unit useless.

Mine flickers every 1 - 2 seconds and falls out about every 10 seconds.

    Mitsubishi WS-55615
HDMI connected from Apple TV to TV
    TV supports 1080 and 480 (not 720).
    TV downsamples to 480
    Flicker started after 4.2 update
Apple Technical support said on the phone that there is no resolution. No way to revert to previous software version.

Constant flickering, basically worthless now. Sony KF-50XBR800. Very disappointed with Apple. At least we need a way to go back to the last software, it was working OK then.

    Same issue! .

I've only owned the ATV2 for a couple weeks now. Today I returned the ATV to the apple store and exchanged it for one off the shelf, in hopes of getting one still loaded with 4.1.1. And I did - it works great again!

However, now I'm getting the annoying Software Update prompt. So every 5 minutes or so I have to select 'Update Later'. Is there an option to have ATV not check, and not prompt?

I'm hoping to not update, and stay with 4.1.1 until the software issue is resolved. I'm not holding my breath though. DVI isn't something they 'technically' support.

    Thanks. And good luck.

TV Model: Sony Grand WEGA KF-50WE610 (50in) Using HDMI-to-DVI connection.

I'm getting the same flicker issues after the update last week. Worked fine before update, since new in December. Now it flickers every second or so, and goes black every 15 to 20 seconds. Totally unwatchable.

Setup is HDMI out to DVI in to Sony Wega KV-36HS510. Tried a couple of different manufacturers' HDMI to DVI cords, no change.

Sony TV manual describes the DVI input as follows: "3.3V T.M.D.S., 50 Ohms. The DVI-HDTV input terminal is compliant with the EIA-861 standard and is not intended for use with personal computers" TV supports 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i.

I spent 45 minutes talking to 4 individuals at Apple Support this morning, and they say they are not aware of this problem! Let's hope they are able to issue a fix for this.

Sony 42 inch projection LCD model KF-42WE620. Hooked up to rocketfish 4-port HDMI switch, 10$ HDMI cables from rocketfish swich to Apple TV2, and $75 Rocketfish HDMI-DVI cable from switch to TV. Optical audio out connection to Harmon Kardon AVR-130 receiver.

Set-up worked before update (although resolution was downgraded to 480p)

After update, screen flickering, and audio badly out of sync. Video drop-outs every 30 seconds or so.

tried direct connection between ATV2 and TV via Rcoketfish HDMI-DVI cable, no difference.

HDMI setting in ATV2 is also frozen on "auto".

I was just about to give my ATV2 away, until I saw this article from AppleInsider:
