I still have This problem, and i tried over 5 headphones i have 2 orginal ipod headphones! and have 2 profissinal Head sets like (Sennheiser),But still have this problem , And all headphones bluged all the way in !!!
i dont have this problem before with all these headphones,after i update my ipod it's all begin!!!

Your the Best! Thanks for the information about the headphones. I think Apple sent me a bad pair of earplugs, because try as I may, I cannot get the earplugs entirely seated into the ipod. That is obviously the problem. I guess my next step is to contact them and hopefully they will send me a new pair. Thanks again!

Make sure to check the socket where you plug the headset in. It is more likely that there is something up inside there that is keeping them from going in all the way.

I had the same problem:
nano worked for a while but turned itself off when the screened dimmed.
Turned out some dust / paper had got into the earpiece socket.
