Mar 6, 2011 9:29 AM in response to locotoroby OneCatFamily,This is crazy! I've been stuck in headphone mode for the best part of two weeks, and just by sucking air through the headphones jack, I've managed to get my iPhone to ring and play music againI'm a sucker (yes, the pun was kinda intended...) for those hi-tech remedies to the silly problems that pollute our every-day lives!

Mar 18, 2011 5:21 PM in response to DarL8ingby Willo,It's been raining all day here so maybe it is a damp issue. I've also sat here sucking on the jack thinking maybe this thread is full of jokesters. No luck for me. Other threads recommend a restore.
Will continue sucking on the jack until this works again.
Update: Continued sucking and it worked again for a few seconds, then back off. Sucked again and worked again for a few seconds, then back to "headphones" mode. Repeated twice more, same temporary results.

Apr 3, 2011 6:43 PM in response to Willoby jadmp,Okay, after spending a few hours researching, reading, playing at "jacksex," restoring, turning the phone off and on countless times...I blew into the jack socket and it worked.
This was the most frustrating thing, but hopefully it is a permanent fix. -

Apr 9, 2011 8:29 AM in response to SoCalSkippyby kirincastle,my iphone 4 was stuck in headphones mode tonight. after browsing through a few forums talking about "how to fix headphone mode", one of the solutions is working for my iphone 4. I think u guys or girls can try this.
1. hold the "home“ button for 5-8 sec until u see the "voice control"
2. say sth, u should be able to see the voice wave on the phone screen.
3. press "home" again, back to home screen. test it, see whether it fix the "headphones mode".
well, at least it works for me.
all the best.

Apr 15, 2011 6:48 AM in response to Delkowby Slap690,Thank you for your post, it worked for me! I too tried everything that I had read except doing a restore. Was determined to try everything else first before I tried a restore. (just upgraded to 4.3.1 and didnt really want to waste my time updating to 4.3.2) thanks again -
Apr 29, 2011 7:53 PM in response to Delkowby oakejs,Sucking worked for me just now. I did try it a few times earlier, but it didn't work until I did it continuously for 10 seconds.

May 1, 2011 9:38 AM in response to SoCalSkippyby alouwomack,My iPhone 4 has NEVER had headphones plugged into it . . . And I'm not able to hear phone conversations without putting the phone on Speaker. The real kicker is I just activated the phone yesterday morning!!! Yes, it's a new phone! I'll be going to the Apple store TODAY.

Jun 7, 2011 6:11 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby peterfromsaintpete,I tried the jack insertion thing about twenty times as recommended and it did not work for me. Then I tried the sucking and it didn't work. Finally I took a can of compressed air and blew air into the phone for ten seconds. It seems to have fixed the problem.

My 3g model would get stuck in headphone more often than not. Within 5 minutes of use, the phone kicks me off the receiver and routes the audio to the earphone jack where nothing is plugged in. I've had this problem since I first got my phone. Many times I went to the Apple Store (5 min away) and complained. Mac geniuses were adamant there was nothing wrong with the phone itself is it was most likely lint or some other debris. They gladly got out a can of compressed air and voila, my phone was normal again. Over time this became so bad I couldn't bear it. I bought a bluetooth headset so I wouldn't lose audio. When I'm on the bluetooth long enough, the phone again sends the audio to the headphone jack and I have to manually set it back to the headset.
After much trial and frustration from Mac geniuses who don't seem to be that bright, I searched and searched until I found the problem. OVER HEATING! On a great many iPhones, this is a major issue. Some don't have the problem (my wife's phone is perfect). The processor heats up enough to short out something on the board which causes the phone to think the headphones are plugged in. Cooling of the phone restores it back to a normal working capacity. A can of compressed air blows at high pressure, but it's also cool. Spraying it into the jack simply cools the board and the phone returns to normal. I urge you to try placing your phone in the freezer for two minutes when in headphone mode. It should cool the board and your phone will restore itself to normal.
Apple knows this was yet another problem with a significant number of sold units. What company wants to admit such a crippling flaw which would force a recall? Apple could probably afford the repairs to all affected units but, it's the sudden drop in AAPL stock which is what they're afraid of. A little birdie told me this is the reason Apple store employees are instructed to admit nothing is wrong with the phones in any capacity.
So for now, cool your phones and see if that takes care of it. Those of you under warranty, get to an Apple store and demand a replacement!
I was going to purchase an iPhone 4 and use the 3g as an iPod. 3g will probably be more useful as a paper weight.
