Q: Apple TV HD Rental Streaming Problem

I wanted to create this topic to ask if others are running into the same issues I am with streaming rented HD movies. I go to play the rented HD movie and am transferred to a screen that says "Loading...." for about a minute or two. Then, that message is replaced with one that says "Ready to play in [xxx] minutes"...with horribly long times listed (my movie was rented last night, and as of this evening, it shows "Ready to play in 232 minutes").

This seems like a MAJOR flaw with the Apple TV. I have no problem viewing YouTube, HD Netflix movies, HD trailers, etc. I have even been able to watch an HD TV show rental within about 5 mins of selecting it. Seems like there may be a major flaw in the streaming process for HD Movie rentals over the Apple TV.

If you haven't tested this yet (or if you have no issues), please post what is happening with your HD movie rentals.

Note: I have rebooted everything, used my Airport Express with the ethernet cord directly into the Apple TV, over wiFi, adjusted the distance between my router and the Apple TV. Nothing has worked.

Had you changed the DNS settings to Google's?

Well so far so good with the new 4.2 update on the ATV2. I've complained loud and hard in these forums about the brutal HD movie download speeds and my ATV2 has been sitting on a shelf for the last few months as a result. I had to put my old ATV back in service as the original ATV actually worked and movies are ready to play in 10 seconds and without issues. I have a 25Mbps VDSL connection (always steady at about 24Mbps tested) and the ATV's are hard wired so no wireless issues. I'm using my ISP's DNS servers.

I decided to give the ATV2 a shot again and did the 4.2 update and tonight for the first time in months, we actually rented an HD movie from iTunes and it was ready to play in 10 seconds. It even downloaded the movie consistently with zero pauses and was finished downloading a half to two thirds of the way through the movie, just like our original ATV.

It's only one movie so far but fingers are crossed that Apple has finally sorted this mess out. Will test again tomorrow night and if we get two good nights in a row on the weekend then that could be a promising sign. Nice to have my Airplay back too. Cheers!

Best way: rent movies in iTunes as they will sit on ur PC or Mac for 30 days. Then stream the rentals from iTunes to ATV2. Once u watch it, it will auto delete in iTunes in 24hrs

ATV2 has 8GB of storage, but it's used for only 2 things:

    1) temp storage/buffer for streamed content and rentals
    2) caching of recently streamed data for resume purposes

So everyone is having the same issue. Does this have something to do with the new update? Looks like the old Apple TV where you actually had to download the movies. Why can't we stream anymore???

How exactly are you streaming from iTunes on your computer to the ATV2?

I rented a movie on my computer via iTunes and its now sitting in the Rental area of iTunes. When I use my AppleTV and go to the rental section is doesn't appear there. What steps are you actually taking to get the movie onto your TV set via this method? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

    Eteyemd,

You can stream like that, but you can also sync up your computer to your apple tv. I forget the exact steps. You either go to "computers" or "Settings" on the apple tv & I THINK you turn on home sharing, then pick your computer from the list, then everything on your computer itunes becomes streamable on the Apple TV. It's also handy for TV shows that are not yet rentable. You can buy them on your computer, then watch them on the Apple TV.

Hi Everyone. I am pretty new to Apple TV 2. I rented two movies last night to my imac. I let them download and then tonight went to my living room to watch them. The first HD movie played for 16 minutes streaming from my shared itunes library "Rentals" and then it just stopped. No nothing. Just stopped. Now when I go back into apple tv the little think doohickie just spins on that movie only. It will play the movies I own but not the HD rental downloaded to my imac. Anyone?

    Thanks very much.

Just discovered this thread. Having same problems as everyone else. Thankfully, iTunes store DO issue refunds whenever this happens. Sending my unit back for testing but don't actually think it's the unit at fault here...
