With no spam filter and a very shaky mail program the least Apple could have done was provided a select all option in the mail preview pane to assist in deleting spam -- which is about 90% of what I get in iPad2. Mail always hangs for me as well.

Who is your email provider? I use Gmail and very rarely get any spam if any on my iPad. I would be either talking to my email provider about this or changing to a new provider if I were you.

I very rarely get GMail spam on the iPad either, but I do get it from other accounts, and that is junk/spam that does get trapped by other email clients such as Outlook and Apple Mail.
So I understand where the OP is coming from.

My main issue is with Apple. I would really like a SELECT ALL button for the mail preview so I can mass delete all of the junk in my inboxes without having to hit EDIT- and select each of them one at a time. Then they can give us the rest of the Mail program that we are missing.

That makes no sense to me. You have to select which ones are junk in the first place! If you had a 'select all' button, you'd still have to go through them all to deselect which ones weren't junk.

I guess that, for the most of us, spam is significantly less than 89% of the total email messages.

Ah, yes, I've got it. You seem to have a malfunctioning iPad if it takes that long to acquire your junk email.
In addition, you should speak to your email provider about their appalling ability to trap spam at the server level. 89%? Are you serious?

The real issue here is that there is no "select all" option within edit. It isn't important whether someone gets 5 spam emails or 5000, the problem is there is no select all functionality. Yes, I realize that I need to go elsewhere to suggest product enhancements...

I actually was wondering about this this morning when I went through my email...I guess I should have figured out by now that there is currently no "select all" feature...
