Mar 21, 2011 11:24 PM in response to DazzaGby danni l,Well... Updated to 10.6.7 earlier this evening, and all was looking good. Didn't deliberately stress my machine, but did double-check that my most used apps functioned as expected. No problems, and I was good for a few hours. And then just now, while simply reviewing a string of previous emails in Mail--bam, a freeze. Same as prior to the graphics kext fix (which did fix and eliminate my freezes). Cursor moves but can't select, unresponsive keyboard, background processes still running, hard power-down necessary to exit. I'll give it another day, but next freeze, I'll be going back to the 10.6.2 kexts. -
Mar 22, 2011 1:29 PM in response to DazzaGby CWGuide,I updated to 10.6.7 this morning. I left my mac running all day while I was out and then this afternoon I've used it to record some audio and watch some HD video on YouTube while uploading a huge file.
With the new update I noticed a huge improvement in safari loading speeds. After implementing the fix safari had been having trouble scrolling but now it's noticeably smoother. Even better, HD video on YouTube is now MUCH smoother. Before the update I couldn't play 1080p videos at all. They stuttered and were unwatchable. Now I'm watching the same vids fine.
Also, and most importantly, NO FREEZES SO FAR! I'll let ya'll know if it does, knock on wood. -

You say that you *implemented the fix* - do you mean the fix from this thread with the kext-files or the new update?

Mar 22, 2011 2:00 PM in response to Tazthedby CWGuide,Yep. I replaced the kext files. When I updated to 10.6.7 I thought about replacing them with the 10.6.6 files before installing but didn't and they still updated fine! -
Mar 22, 2011 2:06 PM in response to CWGuideby Tazthed,Okay thanks.
I am actually interested to know if APPLE has fixed the problem without us doing anything with the kext files at all -
Mar 22, 2011 2:12 PM in response to Tazthedby CWGuide,The update replaces the kext file so anything I did is replaced. So basically if I update and you update at the end both our drivers will be the same. -
Mar 22, 2011 3:45 PM in response to CWGuideby nekosaur,All was well for about 2 hours until late last night.
HARD FREEZE. Still able to move the cursor, just not able to click or interact with the screen. Same as before. The drivers were indeed updated, but Apple did not address this issue in 10.6.7.
The (kind of good) news is that the 10.6.2 driver kext fix still works. Overwrote the new drivers via the tried and true fix and the machine has been stable again all day.
Looking forward to Lion. Pretty sure they will not devote any time to resolving this issue for 10.6. I can only hope that 10.7 is stable - it might have the same issue. Then we will have a real problem, because there will not be any stable drivers to use. Not sure if it would be advisable to overwrite kext files from a previous operating system! -
Mar 22, 2011 3:59 PM in response to DazzaGby Tazthed,PEOPLE!
*It seems like the new update 10.6.7 does NOT fix the freezing problem!*
*Therefore, go to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and REPORT the problem!*
*To those of you who have fixed the problem by replacing kext-files - you SHOULD ALSO report the problem to Apple!* -
Mar 22, 2011 4:44 PM in response to Tazthedby balintalovits,My iMac 8.1 was great all day. No freeze. But tonight same **** happend as before.
HARD FREEZE!
I think ******* apple does not even read this **** thread so its completely useless just as reporting the problem over and over again...
**** YOU APPLE! -

It looks like the ATI Radeon 2400 drivers were updated for 10.6.7 by Apple on January 27th, 2011. (Old kext version was 1.6.26.22, new version is 1.6.26.31)
Looking at the ATI Radeon 2400 kext from OS X Lion 10.7, it is showing a version number of 7.0.52
Could this be a more up-to-date driver? -
Mar 22, 2011 5:14 PM in response to DazzaGby jmanwee, this is VERY VERY disappointing people, man i hope Lion will not have this problem but still Lion is not an excuse.
Why in the world should i be freaking using 10.6.2 when 10.6.7 is out -
Mar 22, 2011 5:20 PM in response to DazzaGby CWGuide,I have still encountered no freezing. I'm going to check to see if my Kext files actually updated -
Mar 22, 2011 5:30 PM in response to DazzaGby CWGuide, hmm interesting. After looking at the kext file (ATI2400Controller) it says it was last modified Friday, January 28, 2011. I THINK that's when I replaced the file so that means that I'm running the old files still. But what I said before still stands. I have noticed great improvements in performance. Weird! -
Mar 22, 2011 5:43 PM in response to CWGuideby Vurey,I've just updated from 10.6.6 (with the old 10.6.2 ATI 2400 kexts) to 10.6.7
As soon as I updated I checked the version of the ATI 2400 kext and it had been updated from the working 1.6.6 version to 1.6.26 that has been causing problems since OS X 10.6.3
I didn't wait around to see if it would cause any freezes. I used the old trick as discussed and reverted back to the working drivers. So far so good.
Still, I am curious about these 10.7 Lion kexts. Perhaps if I were a braver man... -
Mar 22, 2011 5:50 PM in response to balintalovitsby PeterBreis0807,Start up off the Installer DVD 1 holding down the D key.
This will put it into Diagnostic mode.
Run the tests holding down the L key to make it loop.
Let it go for a few hours and note the Error messages if any.
Mine was doing the same thing and it was a HD fault.
Hopefully you have AppleCare and it is still current. You should not buy an iMac without it.
