What determines import speed from hdd cameras?

Hi,

I'm an Apple trainer so I deal with a lot of people importing video from Flip cams, Kodak cams with SD cards, HDD camcorders, etc... Why do some machines import very quickly and some machine import at what seems to be 1:1? all we're dealing with is a file transfer here... The machines are generally late model MBPs with a lot of RAM and Processing power, so it doesn't make any sense that there would be different speeds amongst different machines with the same type of camera...

i.e. I've had two people today with flip cams. one imported almost two hours worth of footage in about twenty minutes, one imported about 10 minutes worth of footage in about 10 minutes. I'm assuming all the flip cams have solid state memory and usb 2.0... what gives?
