Q: 4.3 Flicker Problem

My ATV2 had been working great until I installed 4.3 today. Now every couple of second there is a very annoying flicker on the screen. I have a 1080i TV. Any suggestions? Any way to go back to 4.2?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

OK. The Update finally became available. I installed the new update and all works great - no more Flicker. Thank you Apple!

I did notice that the new HDMI setting is still stuck on Auto and if I try to change it, it behaves as before where it flickers a bit and returns to same setting. But that is fine as I don't care or need this setting. Thanks again...

Ah, it's great to finally watch videos I just took with my iPhone!

Whoops quoted the wrong thing. That's a shame (& same here). No HD on an HD device is still unusable in my book. Just let us select the darn resolution.

The HDMI setting is used for color correction (it fixes the 'pink screen' I had on my other Apple TV which is hooked up to a monoprice HDMI switcher). 4.2.1 fixes all display issues on both TVs. Yay, Apple!

Installed 4.2.1. Still flickered! Restarted. Flickering again! Pulled power, restarted. Okay for now.

I don't think this issue is completely resolved.

My setup: Apple TV 2 to Sony STR-KG800 A/V receiver (built-in HDMI switch) to Sony KDL-40V4000 TV. Apple HDMI cables.

Interesting. I updated to the new version last night and as with you the flickering/ghosting problem with my setup remains. I have a Sony KDL40-W4000 TV connected through HDMi to a Sony STR-DA2400 Av receiver. Must be a persistent problem with that generation of Bravia products. I posted feedback to Apple using the usual link.

Updated to latest version, and the flicker is still there. My TV model is "Grundig Fine Arts 37 LXW 94-9650 FHD". Hopes this will get fixed, or at least reverted to an earlier version where it was no problem.

Watched about 3 hours of content tonight after doing a power cycle (see my above post). Rock-solid image with no flicker.

I'm starting to detect a pattern. I fire it up at night and it flickers. I restart and this usually fixes it (sometimes restart twice). Watch a night's worth of video, no flicker. Put to sleep at the end of the night.

Next night, same cycle. However, it doesn't always flicker. Initial observation here is that flickering is subsequent to it having slept for some hours.

    Good news!

4.2.1 fixed my flicker problem (ATV2 - HDMI-DVI; Sony KF-50WE620). ATV still reporting TV resolution as 480p despite 720p capabilities. HDMI setting locked on auto still.

Still locked at 480p with 4:3 aspect ratio. Although the flicker has gone away.

Sony KDF-60XBR950 with HDMI to DVI cable.

The TV natively supports 720p and works with PS3, XBOX360, and Panasonic BluRay player all using the same HDMI to DVI cable.

I'll be returning my Apple TV 2 this weekend for a refund.

I have an old Apple TV on which I watched TV shows and played podcasts, so my Apple TV 2 was not my primary device and as such, it was hard to establish when the flickering would start. Since 23 March, I've been exclusively using the Apple TV 2 to try to detect a pattern behind the flickering. This is what I've learned.

I believe the trouble occurs on wake. I would sleep it when finished for the day, then wake it the next day and it would usually flicker. Restarting will often fix this, but if it happens again after a second restart, so far pulling power and reconnecting has always fixed it. So the constant is noticing the trouble after wake. After resolving the flickering with restart/repower, it never develops again during a session of watching. I'm going to leave it on from now on to see if that makes a difference.

I've also noticed on occasion long after I've slept it that the front indicator is lit up. I put this down to AirPlay on my iPhone and iPad talking to it. I use the Ambiance or iPod apps on my iPhone every night and both can send to Apple TV, so this might account for it. I note this here in case it's significant (trying to output to video when TV is off?).

I still have flicker too. I am running a Samsung LE40A656A1F with 4.2.1 software. Come on Apple, this is not good enough. I don't expect a manufacturer to break a device AFTER I have purchased it from them. If you are not smart enough to fix the problem please offer a roll-back feature so that my device works correctly again.

As a side thought, could this problem be exaserbated by the fact that the ATV forces a 60 Hz output if the TV can take it? My TV is a 50 Hz set so if Apple allowed the ATV to be set to the TV's native format (as it should be able to anyway for other reasons) would this help the flicker problem?

    Two fixes for you Apple...
