Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs taking a very long time

After having issues with some files in my home directory, Apple Support suggested that I reset home folder permissions by using the Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs option within the Reset Password utility. I did this, and it has been running for nearly 3 hours... is this normal? I'm a little concerned that it is stuck, but I can't tell because it doesn't provide any details or progress bar. I do still see the spinning gear and a grayed out "Running" button.

I am having the same problem. I have an issue with Outlook 2011 opening after I restored my new laptop from my time machine backup. When I create a new account Outlook opens fine so I have narrowed it down to issues with my user account. BUT as mentioned when I try to reset the permissions and ACLs for my account nothing ever happens. I let it run for 4 hours before quitting. I also tried repairing the administrator account and it worked, only taking a second before saying done. I have no idea what to do next.

I'm having similar issues creating a new account with Administrator privileges.
The Accounts window has been sitting there with the spinner going for about an hour now.
One guy here speculates that that it has to go and update the ACL (Access Control List) of every file!
The HD is certainly working flat out, making the machine impossible to use as launching other applications is very slow.

Hi everybody!
I have the exact same problem! I let the Passwort Utility run for 9 hours and nothing happened.
Than I tried this:

1. type into terminal without the quotes "sudo chmod -RN ~" and press return
2. type your password and press return. When you type it it won't appear in terminal
3. when that command is done type without the quotes "sudo chown -R `id -un` ~" and press return
4. boot up off the snow leopard/leopard dvd and after selecting a language select from the utilities menu "Reset Password"
5. Select the user account that is affected and click the "Reset" button in the "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs" section. After this has run, quit the installer and restart the computer

Which I found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10383032&#10383032

In step 5. again the same problem: spinning wheel and a grayed out "running" button. I am thinking about setting up my mac from scratch. No backup from time machine. But this will take a while.

So, has anyone found out where the problem is yet?
Thank you!

I could not figure out why it is not possible to reset "Home Folder Permissions and ACLs" as described as above. But...

here is a good answer referring to this problem. My case is closed with this. I hope it helps everyone else with this problem.
