Q: Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners  - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

We got a 32 GB black iPad 2 yesterday at the Sacramento, CA Apple Store. It is prefect! We looked for defects, but there are none. We lucked out!

Decided to try some exchanges at the apple store. I'm on my 3rd ipad 2 now. I still see botches on the screen. Very annoying when watching movies. I'm going to hold on for another week or so before exchanging at the store again. This is getting very frustrating.

I picked up a 16 GB Wifi ipad 2 on launch day in Canada, on the 25th.

I have the exact same yellow light bleeding problem. I also have a dead pixel.

Not very happy about Apple's quality control. The screen is the most important part of this product.
I'll have to return it to future shop for money back, since they are sold out.

How long should I wait before purchasing a new one? Apparently, I am this issue seems widespread.

I can post pictures if you want

I am sorry. I am from Russia and I bought my ipad 2 in Finland. I have a ligt yellow leakage(stain) near home button. Will it dissappear in 2 days? Or should I go to finland and replace my Ipad?
Are there any experience of disappearing these stains(leakages)?

    Hi all,

I too have the light leakage on every side of my white 64gb wifi/3g... its annoying but it doesnt bother me as much as this white spot on the side of my screen. it is usually visible on white or light pages (surfing the net and stuff).

it looks as though a bunch of pixels are brighter than the rest. its weird but now i have noticed it, i cant stop looking at it!

i know its a bit off topic but anyone else have this?

I bought my Ipad 2 32gb 3G here in Italy, and noticed the light leakage when i got back home. Its not as bad as some that I have seen posted online, but its annoying nonetheless, especially for the price paid... Seeing as the issue is nowhere near being sorted, going to wait a few weeks, hoping things get sorted, and then bring it back. Seems like most people who are exchanging it just receive one that still has the same problem.

    Stl21-

This might correct itself as there are some that have glue that needs to still dry...The iPhone has has similar issues that cleared up..

The light leakage on the screen sides is another matter.

I would have hoped that these units would have left the factory in perfect usage condition. If they haven't then (here in the UK anyway) you have the legal right to take them back to the shop where you bought them from and either get a full refund or a replacement that works as it should work.

In a totally darkened room, with a very dark screen and brightness adjusted to a comfortable level, my iPad 2 also shows some small amount of light leakage along the short edge at the bottom near the home button.

I cannot quite understand when and how this would ever bother me.
How often am I going to watch a very dark screen in a very dark room on my iPad 2?

I wonder whether some of you aren't simply overreacting?

    Apfelwurm -

True to a certain extent BUT...some have it worse than others..

Would you tolerate a little light leakage on an LCD TV? or perhaps an LCD Computer Monitor? or maybe just a little air leakage because your car window doesnt close just as it should and was designed to do?...I would think not..and that is the issue...this is a defect plain and simple, however BIG or small it is to some people and it needs to be addressed...

I'm on my second iPad 2 from the Apple store, the first iPad 2 I got had really bad screen leakage all around the screen. When I got my second my iPad 2 I got it brand new sealed once the "Genius" opened it up and showed me it had a light leakage on the left side of iPad! I took this one as it's not as bad as the first one.

However the funny thing was the store told me that they would replace this iPad as a "good will gesture" as they didn't think the leakage was a problem!! Also at the same time a customer came in to ask for an iPad 2 and they told him they had no stock, yet they had a brand new one in when I complained!! Equally before I called the store I spoke to Apple Care who told me that if you keep the iPad on (screen lit up) the leakage will settle...

    Has anyone tried this..?

That's ridiculous. Yea...leave it on...get some screen burn-in while you're at it. I called Apple a week after launch, opened 2 cases (mine & my hubby's), and they said they will keep the case open until I decide what to do: mail mine back, wait for a new one to be mailed in a few days, or take them to the Apple store and get new ones right then. Or I can just wait for a while and then decide. They said I don't have to decide right away because it has the 1 year warranty on it. I'm not going to try screen burn-in, nor put heavy books on it for a week, or even just "settle" for less than the perfect machine I paid **** good money for. I will, however, use these within that 1 year until I hear that Apple has pushed out new ones that have actually passed the QC for defects. Or...I'll just get my $2000 back at day 364. This is just nuts!

One thing you'll almost definitely not be able to do is get your money back later. That's only possible in the first 14 days. After that, the warranty covers repairs (sometimes replacement), but will not give you a refund. If you think you might want a refund, you should return yours now (assuming it hasn't been 14 days) and buy another one later when you can get a perfect unit.
