. . .not launching after installing the most recent Security Update. I debate whether to download (Security Updates) as they have caused problems in the past. Now, I am out of town (without my system disc) for an extended period of time unable to visually connect with my family. <shakes head>

Any ideas?

    Hi,

Is iChat in the Applications Folder ?

Does it launch from there ?
If it does drag the old icon (That has lost contact with iChat) and let go (Puff of Smoke animation)

Either drag iChat back to the DOCK or Move it to where you want if still open and it should stay.

Otherwise you will be stuck until you have your System Disk

    EDIT
Use AIM Express for Text IM s in the mean time.
Use the Koowy site for Video http://www.koowy.com/
Type in a room name and then tell the other end the URL of that room (Uses Flash to access your camera.)

Dragged new iChat 4.0.8 to dedicated "Internet Applications" folder (sub folder within applications).

Don't organize the Applications folder manually. Instead, create aliases and organize those.

Some installers, such as the Security Update, expect applications to be where they were originally placed.

    Hi,

As Niel says the OS and Security Updates expect things to be in certain places.
Even Third Party Apps can be like this, Adobe in particular likes it's Reader to be in the "Right" place.

In this case the Update seems to have placed something in the Applications folder which isn't actually the App (just the stuff that was supposed to Update it).
As it was "Aimed" at the app it seems to have been given it's name.

You have then replaced the app you did have with the partial info Update stuff.

    So No iChat.

    You Need this Users Tip
The "Easy Way" describes the simplest method of Reinstalling iChat
(Stick your Install Disk in the computer
Drag the window big enough to see the Optional Installs folder and open on it.
    Launch the OptionalInstalls.mpkg
From the list select only iChat)

When that is done and BEFORE Launching iChat, Download and Install this Combo Installer for the 10.5.8 Update.
This will update iChat to make it work with 10.5.8

    Hi,

Actually if everyone could report the steps they had taken as clearly as you did things could be a lot easier to "Fix" for some.

    Glad to have helped.

I recently also lost my ichat icon. I had created a custom icon a while back, but even though I see the ichat.icns file in the iChat > Contents > Resources folder, i'm still getting a generic icon (white paper, pencil, ruler, and brush).

I've tried repairing permissions, but I've had no luck.

You are part way there but the icons can be a bit tricky to create. Try my instructions at:

Hopefully this will give you a working icon albeit the wrong one. If this works I will try to help you with the correct one.

I don't follow your instruction. This issue has nothing to do with Thunderbird. I don't even use that app.

My issue is purely with apple's ichat application.

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Download a test icon from http://links.zero.eu.org/thunderbird/thunderbird.icns.zip
    2. Unzip it
    3. Control-click iChat application and select 'Show Package Contents'
    4. Go to /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/Resources/
    5. Rename the original iChat.icns
    6. Put the downloaded Thunderbird.icns in the folder and rename it iChat.icns
    7. Restart iChat
    8. If iChat fails to find the new icon you can paste it into the application's Get Info as usual and drag it to the dock
    9. Please say if you want me to help you with the correct iChat icon
