Hi! Does anyone know how to make a line break in the title of a chart? For some reason, just pressing return or any combination of return with option, control, shift, etc. does not seem to be working... the title is really long to be on a single line and I'm not able to change the size either.

If there is a way to make a multi-line title I haven't found it. The only way I have found to change the size of the title box is to change the title text content or the font and/or type size. The title box expands or contracts to accommodate the size of its contents.

    Sunshine,

I suggest that you deselect the Show Title checkbox in the Table Inspector, Table tab. Then Insert a Text Box and format it as you wish the title to be.

Changing the font or the size is really easy.
    Click the displayed title.
You will see a text box with two circular handles.
After that you may define the font name, the size and different attributes like color, underlining…

I believe it ignores carriage returns and the like because the chart title also appears in the sidebar. This is also a good reason to not use long titles for the charts. I would do as Jerry suggested: put the title in a text box (and keep "Chart 1", or whatever, as the official title).

Thanks everyone so much for all the feedback!! I ended up just having to hide the title of the chart and add text, then group the two objects together. Kind of a pain so hopefully Apple will fix this in the next version! Thanks again!

'Hopefully' you will Provide Numbers Feedback and request this feature. You'll find the Provide umbers Feedback link in the Application menu ("Numbers" menu).

In case anyone is still struggling with this, you can insert line braks in chart column titles by pressing Option-Return.

Are you sure?  I think your might be talking about tables, not charts.

    Badunit,

I think he may be referring to Category Titles, not Chart Names, when he says Option-Return works. Whether he knows it or not.

    Hi kp,

True for Category titles, which are taken from a header column (see examples— Cat 1 through Cat 4 on table and chart below), but not for the Chart title, which displays an option return as a space, and whose box extends horizontally to accommodate the whole title in a single line, even when that line extends beyond the screen/page boundary (see example on chart).

Table names, when shown, are carried in a box that expands only to the width of the table to which they belong, which led to the example above the chart:

    Picture 9.png

For the table example, there are two tables,

"Table with...title" contains two columns, and is placed behind "Table 1", the table containing the data. Only the first table has the Show title box checked.

Just a parlour trick, though—no advantage I can see to using this method of displaying a long table name over using a  text box, as suggested earlier by Jerry.

I can see where your suggestion regarding category names could have some merit, though. Its disadvantage is in doubling the height of the rows from which those names are grabbed.

    Regards,

    Barry

Yeah my apologies, I jumped the gun. The option-return approach only applies to category titles.
