Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

I am having the same problem with the Wifi on all my Apple products - MBP, iPad2, iPhone4
Like many others, my connection drops although the wireless signal icon remains full. The Apple products thinks it's still connected when it is not connected to the internet anymore. I have to either turn off and on the Airport or "renew DHCP Lease" on MBP / turn off and on the Wireless or "Renew Lease" on iPad2 & iPhone4 to get back the internet connection. This has to be done on a regular basis like every 10 - 20 minutes!
This is disgusting! I am very disappointed with Apple! I have searched the internet on this issue and I have seen that this has been around since the year 2007, and Apple has done NOTHING about it!

Forgot to mention that my Microsoft PCs connected on the same network do not face this same problem that Apple for all it's innovation and technology cannot seem to resolve.
Another point to note is that there is no other wireless network where i am. My wireless is the only network available, therefore it is not a problem with channel interference.
This is obviously a major defect in Apple's products, and so far Apple has not responded nor acknowledged this problem! Again, disgusting conduct from an industry leader wannabe! - and I am an Apple fan! I have gone through 2 MBPs, iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 and now iPad 2

I hope this helps but I had been having the same problems for a year now and I finally quit safari and changed to google chrome. I haven't lost wifi connection for two days now, and before it would get dropped every 10 minutes or so.

I had chronic macbook pro wifi disconnect syndrome. I tried changing my router settings. I tried changing my modem settings. I tried changing security settings. I took the unit to the Genius Bar where they got me to erase my hard drive and reinstall the OS. I took the notebook back and they replaced the airport electronics. Nothing worked until I ditched my Zonet router and got a Netgear WNDR3400 dual band router.

Some routers disconnect transmission on a periodic basis with the aim of getting user computers to reconnect. This is supposed to enhance security. I suspect that the MacBooks do not like this. If your mac is dropping its wifi, try another router. If you can borrow a router, first check your macbook with it to see if that router works with your mac. If you have to buy a router, you could get one from a store with a return policy. Of course, you now know my Netgear WNDR3400 worked for me. It might work for you and it was not expensive--less than the aggravation of all the software and hardware troubleshooting I went through.

    Hope this helps.

I was experiencing the mysterious drops in connectivity and realized that our baby monitor was the culprit. Turned off the baby monitors and baby monitor base station and POOF! Haven't dropped since. Not sure what kind of range they have but I wonder if the neighbors had one if it would also interfere.

I'm sure this won't help everyone but if it helps any of you then yay!

Add me to the list. I updated our wireless access points at work to new NetGear WNDAP350s. I've been testing them in wireless N mode for the last few days and have been running into dropouts. I just had one a few minutes ago, two terminal sessions stopped responding but as far as the AirPort was concerned everything was just fine. When I tried to renew my DHCP lease the system went to using a self-assigned IP and the AirPort icon changed from full power to zero power with an exclamation point through it. I'm not the only person who's been having this problem. There was nothing in the logs to indicate that there was any problem with the AirPort but then, about five minutes after I lost connectivity this popped up in the system log.

4/13/11 5:14:17 PM Apple80211 framework[17324] ACInterfaceGetPower called with NULL interface

After I stopped and started my AirPort I was able to connect up to the network again. The other Mac users where I work (we're an all Mac shop) have been having problems too.

I too have this issue... Seems like a lawsuite is the only way to make a company act responsible. Perhaps one will awaken Apple to this issue. I didn't pay almost $3k for a half-*** network connection. I'm going to look into a class action lawsuit, there are plenty of people having this issue.

Just found this thread.  It seems to be the largest of the numerous WiFi issues threads.  Apple please wake up and fix your product.  I am past the 30 day return period but would like to be able to use my new 15" MBP 2011 laptop on my university WiFi without having to toggle airport on and off every 5 minutes.  My "old" MBP from last year worked great but seeing this thread with over 200,000 views and close to a 1000 replies tells me this is a widespread problem that needs to be fixed.  What is the recourse?  Do I schedule a genious appointment when I know that it is a known issue?  Is this what it will take? Constant badgering?  Have they acknowledged there is even a problem?

Same problem here. Brand new 15" MBP (expensive!) but randomly drops Airport connection even though Airport Extreme base station is just 6 feet away.

When websites hang, I have to click on the Airport Icon which causes it to "search" and it immediately unhangs (a solution, but not a fix!). But Airport also randomly disconnects entirely and doesn't reconnect automatically as it should. Signal strength is always showing full (as it should with the base station only 6 feet away).

It only seems to be acting this way at home - not at Starbucks or elsewhere, but I have removed all potential sources of interference to troubleshoot-all with no success at eliminating the problem.

    This is driving me crazy!

My wireless connection drops for a few seconds and picks back up automatically.  VERY ANNOYING!!!  Its a joke, has been doing it since I bought the computer 1.5 years ago, figuring someday a OS update would fix the issue but no.  Im a computer tech that knows a lot about whats going on and it seems to be an OS issue.  Ive tried all of Apples tricks and none work.  Why should I have to be doing all kinds of tricks anyhow?  I have my computer setup to dual boot with Win7 and when on Windows it has NEVER happened, not once.  So Windows 7 works fine but OSX doesnt?  The arogance of Apple is getting old, VERY poor customer support. its to bad the Apple community just lets Apple do whatever and never hold them accountable, they just run out and buy the next product.  Apple people just say, turn on and off wifi (no big deal), change channels all the time, reconfigure your router, tell all your neighbors to turn off their routers, if Windows was having the issue Apple heads would be laughing and laughing.  I like some of Apples products but until they stop the arrogant crap of nothing is wrong we are Apple Im not paying up for their "crap" anymore.  I loved their products when Apple was small but since they have gotten big they just try to push products out to make Jobs $$$ and quality has suffered.  The major problem is Apple never fesses up to anything unless there is a lawsuit or Congress comes knocking.  Just a matter of time before the consumer wises up and Apple takes a fall.  Its to bad I used to recommend Apple products but I can no longer put my name out there in support of Apple.

I found a solution! For me at least. I posted in this thread a few weeks ago after buying a brand new 2011 Macbook Pro. Had the same problems--when using wireless, websites either loaded slowly or connection would drop regularly. Very annoying.

My solution: replacing my old 2.4 gHz G/B router with a brand new 2.4 + 5 gHz N router. I went with a netgear N600.

I am now very pleased. Unfortunately, I think I've seen other people in this thread who replaced their routers and it still didn't work for them, which leads me to think this won't work for everyone. But this (so far) has worked for me. Just thought I'd share. And who knows--maybe the reason mac tech support and genius bar people have been unhelpful is because they are using newer routers which work with the macbook pros! That's just my guess anyways.

Same problem here with a 2011 MBP. Issue started on Saturday although my iMac and MBA are on the same network without an problem. I use a Time Capsule and have both the 5GHz network (iMac and MBP) and the regular network setup (MBA and PC). I just called Apple and according to them it is not a known issue - so why are there so many people posting here?

Anyway, since the call, I've been online so you might want to try this simple fix.

Go to Apple, System Preferences, Network. Click the "AirPort" on the left and click the minus sign to remove it. Then click the plus sign to add Airport back in and click "Create" Follow the next few steps and be sure to click Apply.

That was it for me. We'll see if the connection holds through this evening. I lost the connection about 3 times today and each time, it never restored itself. So, when I lose the connection and am not at the computer, it is pretty obvious as the computer will be off-line.

    Hi Jim

I just bought one of the Asus USB N10's to try and solve the wifi issue on my brand new MBP 15inch 2011.  Firstly I must add to everyone else's comments I am seriously ****** off with having spent £1500 without a sniff of this problem being mentioned.  Will Lion OS solve do we think?

Anyway in trying to solve this as I say I bought the asus N10 having seen your post but I can;t get the **** drivers to install. Did you do anything special? Mine just runs through the install, restarts the MBP and then no new hardware in the sys prefs at all. THe dongle isn't lighting up when i plus it in either.

    Any hints greatly appreciated.

    This whole thing is FUBAR!
