Hi, I want to get my Aperture Library off of my internal HD since I am running low on space. Is there an easy way to take all my Masters out of the Aperture Library and make them reference files instead (on an external HD). I don't simply want to move the Aperture Library file to the external, I just want all my photos as reference files instead.

Thanks

*File->Relocate Masters* will move the masters.

I'm wondering if there is such an "official" way for iPhoto as well...

I'm planning to add a SSD to my iMac and would like to locate the user folder on the SSD while keeping the masters on the (bigger) HDD.

My idea was to move the masters folder to another location and replace the masters folder in the iPhoto library with an Alias /symlink.

I tried out in a test setup and it works well so far --

but I'm feeling uncomfortable since I don't know if this is a really reliable solution, and I'm aware of some risk for future versions of iPhoto...

Has anyone done this before ?

    btw - same with iMovie:

I moved the 'iMovie Events' and 'iMovie Projects' folders to another place

and left the correspondent Aliases in the '~/Movies' folder.

iMovie does this accept and works well.

    --- but how long ??

iPhoto '11 can handle referenced originals; you can import your images referenced, but this is still not  is still not very reliable in iPhoto. You cannot relocate or consolidate originals, and the worst of all, you cannot reconnect them from within iPhoto, if the link between masters and originals gets broken. If you only have iPhoto, I'd strongly suggest not to use referenced originals with iPhoto.

If you want to make your iPhoto library referenced, why not use Aperture to relocate the originals? You can open your iPhoto library in Aperture; both applications share a unified library format. And if iPhoto should loose the connection between originals and versions, you will be able to fix it using Aperture.

    Leonie,

    Thx for your hint!

What you're describing is exactly why I didn't want to use the referenced option in iPhoto...

... as well as I don't want to lose the comfort of managed masters.

Meanwhile I encountered that iPhoto doesn't really appreciate  my idea of the symlink'ed masters (access rights error repeatedly popping up, repairing doesn't help...)

-> I haven't got Aperture so far, but I'll probably switch over to it  now...
(even if the AppStore rewiews of the latest version sound horrible ?!??)

    Renato,

For me the latest version is running very stable, much faster and with better memory management than the previous versions. There still seem to be a few problems with the Facebook integration, but I do not use Facebook.

Not sure how much stock you should put into those reviews. Most of the people there seem to have an issue that hasn't shown up much on these forums.
