Would be extremely useful to see some images that demonstrate what you are talking about. It could be your export settings or the specific adjustments you are using when you talk about artifacts.
With respect to the "blown highlights" it could be the boost setting in RAW fine tuning among other things. When you first look at your images during import you are seeing the embedded JPEG not the processed RAW which explains the difference when you click on them but need some more specifics with examples to give you any meaningful advice.

I wonder how I can show you some images rejected by iStickphotot. My files are rather big - sometime even 24MB. It is almost always the Brushes or Presets that seem to cause the issues. I have since stopped using them and upload only photos that need hardly any touching. My acceptance rate is going up again. I chose Aperture 3 against Light Room 3. I now feel I should have stuck with Adobe for better results. I only chose Aperture because it is Mac on Mac!
