I've been having exactly the same problem. I just posted my own discussion topic about it, but it sounds exactly the same. Although mine definitely said "We're sorry. Your account could not be UPDATED due to a system error. Fill out the form below and send it to get your account UPDATED." (i.e. updated, not created). I'm signed in right now with an old Apple ID just so I can post this, but I really really want to get my normal Apple ID back. Like you, I can sign in everywhere else (iTunes Store, Apple Store online, etc), but not in the Support Communities. I had a lot of posts and also points that I'd hate to lose!

I just had the identical experience with the identical error message, except that I consider my PW very strong.
The worst part was that I wasn't able to ask anyone for help here because I had to sign in first to post something, but as I couldn't sign in I wasn't able to post...
OK, it seems to be working again for the moment, but it's sure confusing.

Still no luck for me. Caroline, were you able to get yours working?

Have you already tried to contact the Apple Support Communities staff?

Yes, there was a form that came up along with the error message when I tried to sign in. I filled it out and sent it in. Is there another way to contact the Host, other than tha and this posting?

Yes, I also filled out that form.
I got a reply from them yesterday, but then it was already working for me.
I don't know whether there is an official e-mail address you can use - check out "Contact Us" -, but I know that they are very well aware of the problem and working on it, so for the moment try to be patient...

Caroline, Did you ever get your account up and working again?

No, still have to use an alternate Apple ID--not sure anyone is still trying to fix this but I keep filling out the form that pops up asking for help

I actually used my apple and ID and PW this morning but my community account was totally gone so have had to resign up to communities.
Used my actual apple ID and PW but it said I did not exist and so now instead of being a user since 2004, it now says I only joined today on the 24th April 2011 !!!

I just created this account so that I could post here. I also am a long time member of the discussions as "sactobob" and my Apple ID is working fine everyplace Apple except this new Communities deal and works from my iMac, my Air, my iPhone and my iPad. Almost everyday, I have tried and I just keep getting the "account could not be created due to system issues" message. Tried everything that anyone suggested. Even tried an old Apple ID.
And I have sent that form describing the problem at least 5 or 6 times with no response. Spent the last couple of hours with Apple support on the phone. They were just coming up with the same ideas like deleting cookies, clearing cache, etc...
This sounds to me like Apple is having database problems relative to validating our ID's for moving into the Communities from the old discussion forums. Does anyone know if they are working on the problem?

I have sent you emails on this. Have you checked the email address that is associated with your "yaledoc72" username?

quick one here... so why is it when I entered my username and password that I have had for years that it asked me to create a new username here on the communities pages.
I first had an Apple ID and .Mac with this username in 2002.
I know look like I have only been with Apple for hours and not years !!!! SULK...
thanks / Joseph

I got last email from you April 19 and replied same day to the address on your email. Just sent another copy of my reply to that email.
