Editor Tool Highlight Usability Problem

In the new discussion & reply editor, every tool in the toolbar highlights whenever the pointer is placed over it. This is not desirable because several tools that toggle features on & off also use the same highlighting to indicate their on or off status.

The problem with this is that if one turns on or off a toggling tool, there is no indication that its status has changed until the pointer is moved off the tool.

For example, if the spellchecker is turned on & I want to turn it off, clicking the tool gives me no immediate indication that I have done so. And since there is a brief (& sometimes not so brief) delay before the editor window shows the change, I might be tempted to click the tool again because I thought the first click was not recognized. The result is I have toggled the tool off & then back on again, so it seems as if the tool won't turn off.

The same problem can occur with the text style tools, for instance when trying to remove bolding from a highlighted word or phrase.

There are several solutions for this but I think the simplest & most intuitive is simply not to have the tools highlight when the pointer is over them. To indicate that they perform actions, the pointer could change from an arrow icon to the pointing finger one, just like they do elsewhere in the UI for things like the "Your Stuff" item at the top of the page. Highlighting should be reserved for status indication.

Agree that the TinyMCE implentation isn't the best, but it's at its worst when I've tried to:

Type format type spellcheck format type format spellcheck type format type spellcheck format ...

    Best solution:

Type > Spell Check > Format > Add Reply

    -or-

Type > Format > Spell Check > Add Reply

I think one is bound to get confused and frustrated toggling things on and off as they go.

The highlighting doesn't bother me but the fact that the Post Message button of the Advanced Editor doesn't when you use it to post the message does.  There's not indication that you've clicked on the button until the message is posted and that sometimes takes longer than expected.

And the spelling feature is rather useless IMO as it doesn't offer corrections like Safari's spell checker does.

Mostly agree, the way it is would seem a bit confusing to many I guess.

    Instead of 3 editors

1 - basic - option to use html

2 - advanced - option to use html

    3 - html

    Just have 2

    1 - advanced-option to use html

    2 - html

The advanced editor is both basic & advanced bundled.

You're right.  It wasn't apparent that we had to left click on the word to bring up the spelling options.  But it's there.  Thanks.

I much prefer the Safari editor and it's ease of opening (Command+Shift+;).

Can anyone tell me how to find this "Advanced Editor."

I have spent way too much time trying to figure out where it is.

I have "My Products" filled out and  chosen to show, but apparently the lack of this editor is keeping it from being shown.

    This is aabsolutely crazy!

I went to my Profile, selected "Edit Products" and there is no Advanced editor there.

So I took a screen shot, and guess what's on the top of the screen shot?????

It is NOT on the page!Screen shot 2011-04-28 at 7.16.47 PM.png

I'm referring to the editor for posts like here.

    OK, Sir Toad . . .

Can you, or anyone else, give me the steps for using the Advanced freakin Editor so that "My Products" will show up every time?  Actually, I see that most of the posts here have no specs noted.  Maybe I should just forget about it.
