In my version of iChat I can only chat. I am not able to send files, video conference or use any other features. Is my version of iChat old or do I need to change some system preferences. How do I enable the other iChat functions?

And the partner to who you want to send a file also have iChat with an AIM oder Mobile Me Account?

Do I have to have a MobileMe account to chat?  I don't know if the other people have a mobile me account? Should I register for that to have access to that account? Do let me know. Also where do I download g-talk for my mac? Will that affect whether I have the other chat functions available to me? Because as of now, everything is greyed out on the bottom of my Jabber List. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

    Hi,

Your OS 10.5.8 will have iChat 4.0.9

This can do everything that iChat 5 can.

The minor changes to the way you add Buddies is probably the most visible.

An Intel Mac can do the Backdrops as well as the Video Effects where as a G5 or G4 can't.

iChat 4 can Video to anyone using iChat (Whatever version -  2 and above)

It can send files to those same people.

This is irrespective if they are using a Google/Jabber iD (and you are) or an AIM one whilst you do.

It will not Video Chat to the Standalone app called GoogleTalk.

It cannot Video Chat to Anyone (PC or Mac) using the Web Mail Chat option and the Browser Plug in.

It will not Video to any Jabber app that can also do Video.

Jabber apps including the Standalone GoogleTalk use a Protocol called Jingle to Connect In Video.

In fact Google's variation on this also can't Video to other Jabber apps.

This is because iChat uses SIP to Connect (Session Initiation Protocol) the same As VoIP phones, adapters and Software phones do.

Jingle and SIP are not compatible.

If you Click on a Buddy to Highlight and then use th Apple (CMD) and I keys together (Get Info) you can look at what the capabilities of the Buddy is.
That and the lack of Video or Audio icons next to the Buddy will tell you if they can video/Audio or not.

File Transfers to some Jabber servers can vary.

More info as has been asked for will help in this.
