I have all settings for displaying images in messages, but they do not appear, only the question mark icon in the placeholder. Where else could I check?

Perhaps the sent images are corrupt form the sender.

Every message, every time, over months. Probably not.  Good idea, though.

This strongly implies that the images were linked by the sender from a server remote to the sender, and the full link to the server did not survive to you.  Does the final header indicate any attachments?

Yes links to these messages are seen in the raw message source. They appear to be well-formed and, in fact do go to the correct images when entered as URLs in a browser. I say correct because I can see them in iPad Mail side-by-side while testing.

Keep in mind - as stated in my original message - that this is not a fleeting issue that happens occassionally. It applies to every "rich text" message I receive. Screen shot 2011-05-07 at 9.29.27 AM.png

And there is no Load Images button at the top right of the message?

Keep in mind that only HTML messages can convey these embedded images, so not unusual in that sense.  If in Mail Preferences/Viewing you have selected to "Display remote images in HTML messages in HTML messages", then something must be stuck about that functionality.  Try deselecting that option, quitting Mail, relaunching Mail and immediately reselecting the option.

    Getting back to this:

No, Ernie. No Load Images button... unless:

    1. In Viewing prefs, I set Display remote images in HTML messages in HTML messages to unchecked.
    2. Restart Mail
    3. See Load Images button in it proper position.
    4. Click button
    5. Load Images button disappears and there are still no images.

Try this -- select that option to display remote images, then quit Mail.  Relaunch Mail, and again deselect.  Does it now stay in place?

Nope. Been doing this all along. The Load Images button shows in the header with the blue background. When I click, the button goes away, the background turns white, and the images are not shown.

I'm encountering this same issue (Snow Leopard, now Lion too), and can't for the life of me think of any other apps I may have that might be impeeding mail form doing displaying images. I have read on other forums that "Little Snith" can effect Mail, but i am not using Little Snitch.

Has anyone found a resolution for this issue?

    Thanks

What type of file is expected to be attached?  Is the size of the message adequate to include the one or more attached files?

Has anyone solved this yet.  Same problem here.  HTML remote images not loading, regardless of how prefs are set.

I am also, since yesterday, having this problem on my MBP. I have done cold restarts and all the other remedies to no avail. When I click on some, but not all, of the question marks it will take me to the url in the browser and show the image or site page.

I just checked the same email message on my iPhone and the images were not in it either. I will contact the sender (KIVA) and see if they have been getting reports of image problems with their outgoing mail.

    Update:

Been a week now and most messages with images are not displaying the images, only the question mark. Was this some hidden update to Mail or the OS in general?

Just in case this helps someone - I thought I had the same problem with a new system until I changed the view preference back to Use Classic Layout (under view in the preferences for Mail). Then I got all the inline images back. Strange that one view should show them and the other one doesn't, even though the preference for showing them is on for both cases...
