You need some text for the cursor to be placed.

You do not need some text in order for the insertion point to be placed.

Rather than clicking on bold, html, or something similar that I would then need to undo, I find it much simpler to just click anywhere in the empty text box - and there the insertion point is, top left corner where it should be. One action.

    Hi babowa,

    I seem to prefer 10.5.8

It is what is on my G4/1Ghz Dual Processor.

It can run anything from the OS 9.2 that it came with (Plus a version of OS X but really early)

    I got Panther soon afterwards.

It has several extra drives installed and has a added PCI card for USB 2.0

On the other hand my MacBook Pro came with Tiger and can run Snow Leopard.  Cannot run OS 9.x and will not be able to run Lion.

Only three OS versions seems like a bit of a swizz right now (compared to the G4).

As Don implies, it did take me a long time to move to OS 10.2 and even then it was a long while to let Classic go. (Although I did not hold out as long as Don !!)

I click on the mouse to insert the cusor.  This was a challenge by b noir to insert the cursor with out clicking the mouse in the input box.

Just checking, Robert. Can you get the cursor to appear if you use one of the edit controls rather than clicking in the text area? (For example, I can get the cursor if after the box opens I click the B boldy thing instead of clicking in the writing area.)

Ah - missed that, Somehow your post ended up as a reply to Tuttle's, not to b noir's.

OK. Easy solution - tap the Tab key three times. You're in the box with insertion point blinking.

Sorry - just tried that; using 3, 4, 5, or 6 tab key tappings does absolutely nothing. I have to point the cursor into the text field and then click.

Hmm - works for me. Might have something to do with a browser setting for how using the Tab key behaves, whether it jumps focus from element to element (just about anything clickable) or only from text-entry box to text-entry box on the page.

In my browser (Safari 5.0.5) using the Tab key initially places the insertion point in the searchbox in the Apple menubar (next to "Support"), next press in the searchbox for ASC (same line as Welcome), then in the messege entry text box.

Checking on other pages (like homepage) it is also dependent upon what's available on a particular page, too. Pulldown selector menus (like for number of items on a page, or something in the RH sidebar) get added to the selection rotation if they're present.

That could be - hadn't thought of that; will have to give that a workout a little later.

    A nice little improvement:

With the old software when I went to the sign in page I needed two tabs to highlight the name text box and a return to sign me in. Now opening the sigh in page puts curser in the text box and all I need is a return. I have the name and password filled in automatically.

Okay, I just tried it in Safari and it works as you described - I guess my problem is that I never use Safari - my browser of choice is Firefox and it does not work there.

On my Firefox (4) just hitting tab once does it. Maybe some setting in about:config. Why not ask in the Firefox forum? No registration needed.

Well, I'm on FF 3.6 and FF 4 is not being offered when checking for updates - although I can get it by going to the site. So why would that be? Is v. 4 a beta?

Not a beta at all. It's already had one update and it's solid.

No, not offered directly from 3.6. Just get the new App (4.0.1). It will use your current 3.6 Profile folder and preserve all your bookmarks, settings and Add-ons, at least those that are compatible. (But make a backup copy of the entire FF folder in ~Library/Application Support first so you can revert if you want. Also, remove the current 3.6 App. I put mine somewhere and zipped it. But I don't think I'll ever have to go back to 3.6.)

I hated the new Bookmarks toolbar with icons and found an easy tweak to remove them. Tell me if you want it. Also, if you want tabs back on the bottom, it's in View>Toolbars>Tabs on bottom. The default is now tabs on top. And, you can play with View>Toolbars>Customize, which you probably know. There are a few other things to get used to, but not so different from 3.6. It's been working great for me.

Thanks, I'll check it out and think about it...
