Q: ipad 2 with eMac 10.5.1 ??????? Work around??? Help??

I have an eMac with os 10.5.1 and the itunes is 9.---

I was trying to hook up the new out of the box iPad2 and the mac did not recognize it. I tried to restart the computer, I tried with itunes open and itunes closed.

I tried with different usb ports and an other usb cable.  The ipad 'beeps' when plugged into the usb but the computer does not recognize the ipad ;o(

I believe that it may be the firmware but I can't find an update.

My new "iPhone" works perfectly well with this computer.

Can any one help? before I return this iPad to Apple and tell them to eat it.

Well, the sysregs for an iPad:

    • Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
    • Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
    • iTunes 10.2 or later recommended
      (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    • iTunes Store account
    • Internet access

    show three possible issues.

    1) you say you are at OS 10.5.1. You need to upgrade to 10.5.8 unless the 5.1 is a typo. Free upgrade via Software update in your Apple menu.

    2) iTunes. It wants v10.2, also a free upgrade.

Those are the easy fixes. The third may be harder. The specs say USB 2.0 required. Early eMac have USB 1.1; later ones have USB 2.0. The way to find out is to do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click "More Info..."

That should bring up a screen that looks something like this:

    SysProf_main_forASC.png

Note the second line in the main window, "Model Identifier." If it says, "PowerMac4,4" you have a USB 1.1 eMac; if is says "PowerMac6,4" you have the required USB 2.0.

For a time some iPods (yes I know) specced as need USB 2.0 would work on a USB 1.1 port, albeit slowly. Then newer ones would not work on USB 1.1 at all. Same thing could be going on with the iPads.

You could ask in the iPad forums if anyone has found a workabout to not having USB 2.0.

If you do not have a USB 2.0 eMac, that's probably a dealbreaker--you can't upgrade to 2.0 like you could with, say, a minitower Mac with expansion slots.

Thank you for your help ;o)

I tried to go to the "update software" on my computere and it ran a check and said that all was up to date and it was still only 10.5.1 and my itunes will not upgrade past 9 something when I try to updaate it  (i'm not in front of the mac now).

It sounds like I have hit a wall with the capabilities of my old eMac??? I looked on the apple site for the os upgrade software and it doesn't seem to offer anything newer than what i already have.

This is Leopard Combo update 10.5.8

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866

Backup all of your data before installing the update.

If all goes well go ahead with the other updates.

You can get the 10.5.8 Combo updater as a standalone installer:

Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update

    and iTunes is here:

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

What did  System Profiler say about your version?

When you first do "About this Mac..." what does that show for your OS version? It would be in this window, the second line of text that is gray:

If you have a Leopard-compatible eMac running less than 10.5.8, and Software Update is not picking up the newer version, something could be fouled up with the system. Sometimes, repairing permissions will get past this log jam.
