I right clicked and backed up my iphone 3gs then unplugged it

plugged in my new iphone 4 and restored it to existing backup (the backup was timed 5 minutes before i plugged it in)

then it took 10 minutes and everything was ok (but then said it needed to update the software.. then started downloading)

the new phone only had contacts and photos transferred, no apps or emails or music

any help ?

i have also already formatted the old one at the same time as it was backing up... yes very silly thing to do

thanks

Your backup worked correclty - Apps, emails and music are not stored in the backup file and are thus not restored with the backup.

Apps and music should still reside on your computer in iTunes, so you can just resync those files to the iPhone.

Emails should still be stored on your email server, so when you set up the email accounts they should populate to the phone shortly.
