May 21, 2011 7:45 AM in response to DanRybby nishom21,Looks like im having the same issue. I use the monitor at my business to monitor POS transactions and monitor our security cameras. I just upgraded my macbook pro from the early 2010 model to the newly released 2011 macbook pro 13". Seems like apple really has no fix for this, and i may need to insist for an upgrade like others have. Monitoring camera's with the screen flickering 2-3 times a minute is rather annoying and ticking me off considering that this $899 display i purchased isnt working as promised.
If you dont mind me asking, those who got their's swapped for a 27", did you have to pay the difference ($100) or did they do it for free? I have two of these monitors and though one is hooked to a mac mini, i would like to see if i can get them both replaced at my business.

I offered to pay the $100.00 for the upgrade when I was at the genius bar. It is the resonable thing to do. You are getting an upgrade from the 24. In my case the monitor was 10 months old or so.
On the 27 you will be able to watch double the monitors with the 2560 x 1440 razor sharp resolution. Plus another upgrade is the sound quality on the 27 is great!

May 21, 2011 10:07 AM in response to lachnessby nishom21,Did you bring in your entire display and macbook setup to the Genius bar? I doubt i'd have time to do this, considering that my business is like 45 minutes away from the apple store. Would they be willing to do the swap over the phone, im going to call them later today. I dont mind paying the extra $100, i just dont want to go through hours of waiting for some extensions cable or having the LED panel replaced, as iv read in this thread. I got a business to run, so time is money.
I've only had the monitor for roughly 6 months. I purchased two new ones from a seller on ebay. They both have apple warranty till Sep 2011, and apple care till 2013. Does this affect my chances of getting this replaced? Seeing the seller had registered them both under his name which i then had changed.

May 21, 2011 11:00 AM in response to nishom21by lachness,Yes, I did take my display and macbook to the genius bar. I had an open case with the apple 800 support people but I was not getting anywhere.
I made an appointment. I spent 45 minutes discussing and demonstrating before they agreed to replace the display.
Time is money, but I code all day and could not stand the flickering and blackouts. If Apple had not stepped up to the plate, I would have been forced to sell my 24 ACD. I would *not* have replaced it with an Apple product.
Good Luck.

May 21, 2011 12:05 PM in response to DanRybby Kyle O'Bannon,AppleCare called me again and requested a "capture" of my 13-inch MBP and 24-inch ACD for Apple Engineers. He set up a Genius Bar appointment for me at my local Apple Store. When I arrived, they exchanged my setup for a new 13-inch MBP (my third exchange) and a new 27-inch ACD. No more flickering or blackouts. I couldn't be happier. Good luck to all. I hope their engineers find a real fix soon or Apple exchanges everyone's 24-inch for a 27-inch.

May 21, 2011 12:09 PM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby nishom21,Did they exchange the 24" LED display to a 27" for free?
-
May 21, 2011 12:23 PM in response to nishom21by Kyle O'Bannon,Yep— free. The Apple Store seemed a bit surprised by that, too. I think it was free only because Apple Engineers had requested a "capture". The AppleCare rep said that their engineers wanted my exact setup for testing purposes to help find a fix.

May 21, 2011 12:36 PM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby nishom21,What exactly is a "capture" ? Anyways, its nice to see Apple giving a free upgrade for the inconvenience this display is causing.

May 21, 2011 4:03 PM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby nishom21,Yea, so i contacted apple support for a second time regarding the display flickering. They also did a "capture" and hopefully they can either fix the issue with a firmware fix, or else i may have to insist on an upgrade. I cant stand monitoring my business transactions and cameras with perodic blackouts. The senior advisor i spoke to said he would get back to me within 3-4 business days regarding the answer their enignerring team has towards the results they obtained from the capture i performed. They have you run two programs that saves log files of your macbook pro and one that saves the settings and details regarding your display, which you then email back to them.
Lets see what happens, will update and let everyone know.

May 21, 2011 4:57 PM in response to nishom21by Kyle O'Bannon,Well, I guess there's a software capture and a hardware capture. Three or so weeks ago, an Apple Discussions Host noticed my post and called to request a hardware capture whereby I sent Apple Engineers my 13-inch MacBook for testing and they sent me a new MBP. After calling AppleCare last week, they performed a software capture with an app that AppleCare sent me via email. AppleCare called me again Wednesday to request a hardware capture, where Apple Engineers wanted me to send them both my 13-inch MBP and 24-inch ACD for testing. This time, he set up the hardware capture at my local Apple Store and I received a new MBP and 27-inch ACD in exchange.

May 22, 2011 5:13 AM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby NicoNB,Similar problem here with a 2011 iMac 27" 3.4 i7 GPU with 2 Gb and a 24" ACD. Also black outs and glitches.
The iMac is now tagged as a DOA and will be swapped for a new iMac.
Reading this discussion I am not sure this new iMac will solve my problem with flickering of the 24" ACD.
BTW no problems when the ACD is connected to a 24" iMac (early 2009) or a 15" dual GPU MBP mid (2009).

May 22, 2011 11:29 AM in response to Kyle O'Bannonby sciencegal,Same here (frequent blackouts and rapid horizontal shifts) with a 24" cinema display and a 2011 13" MBP. It doesn't occur immediately after startup. With brightness set at 100% it takes 45 - 60 minutes. But once it begins it gets so bad that working with the display is impossible. At some point the display went snowy gray and black afterwards and didn't return at all.
For the record, I did experience the same problems (less annoying but bad enough) with my old 2009 MBP. They took the display in and replaced the logic board. Then they replaced the board on the laptop. Nothing changed. And Apple was never able to reproduce the problem themselves. The blackouts were infrequent, but I've always been able to reproduce the rapid horizontal shifts myself just by turning up the brightness to 100%. To delay the problems I usually work with brightness at 9 bars. But even then the rapid horizontal shifts occur every now and then, and when ambient temperature is 75 or higher they are just as annoying, despite the low brightness setting.

May 23, 2011 9:22 AM in response to DanRybby no surprises,I'm glad I'm not alone. I have a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro and a 24" LED Cinema Display that worked perfectly with my old late 2008 MacBook Pro. After upgrading the computer, I get random blackouts and horizontal shifts. I submitted a bug report, and it got filed as a known issue. I wish the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.4 had fixed this. Here's hoping that 1.5 does the trick.

May 23, 2011 9:31 AM in response to no surprisesby loyalwhite,There seems to be some scepticism on this board as to whether this is a problem that can be fixed in software. When I spoke to Applecare two days ago, they stated it could and would be addressed in a software update. However, it wasn't said with much conviction, if you know what I mean.
I am reading on here about people being given replacement 27" displays in place of their 24" ones. My concern is, even though my MacBook Pro is brand new, my 24" Apple Cinema Display is 18 months old, so I fear that I am hardly likely to be offered that solution.
Ironically, I only got a new MBP because mine was stolen in a burglary at my house. I didn't particularly want Thunderbolt, it just happened to have been launched since my original MPB was bought. Now it's as if the b**stard thieves have inflicted this on me that I have to live with all day. I ran a session in Final Cut with a client earlier today and looked like a complete idiot, having to keep apologising for the screen going black for two seconds at a time.
SORT IT OUT APPLE! NOW!

May 23, 2011 3:45 PM in response to loyalwhiteby mjz12956,I wrote to Steve Jobs explaining the issues while knowing full well that he would not reply. My hope was that a supervisor level customer service associate would respond. Last week I received that call and reviewed the issues. The representative spoke with the tech people and they did forward a program to capture the problem. I forwarded the file back to them and a few days later received a call back. Net-net, Apple is replacing my MBP 11 and my 2010 24" Cinema Display. While they are telling me that they want to study the two units in their labs, I suspect they are fully aware that the most recent software fix failed and there is indeed an incompatibility issue between the first rmanufactured run of the MBP 11 and the display. Further I suspect there is a component problem with the 24" display. I spent $4K on equipment that is flickering and blacking out often and that is unacceptable. My advice to those who have this issue is to reach out to Apple Corporate via letter or email and let them know your dissatifaction.
