It will ask for a password.

You should of had a Passcode on it so they cannot get to anything in the first place.

You may want to think about all the websites you have visited on the iPhone and any that you have logged into as those sites most likely have stored your credentials thus they can go to any website as you.

Also they have access to your email accounts that you may of setup on the phone thus can read and send email via your accounts.

So you may want to go change ALL your passwords to all the sites you know you went to as well as all your email accounts.  Also for security might as well change your iTunes/Apple password.

You can do it from iTunes

Store > Sign in > Store > View my accounts >

If you do this, does 'find my iphone' stop working?  I left my ipad on a plane and to be safe changed my appleid password in itunes.  I also put a password and return phone number and pu a request in site.  But then it just occured to me that by changing the password I may have made it impossible for my device to connect to the icloud and defeated the whole purpose.  And now I cannot change the password back because itunes does not let you recycle old passwords.
