May 23, 2011 6:16 PM in response to mjz12956by Farooq90,Your like the 5th person ive read about apple obtaining their configuration for lab testing and replacing their MBP and ACD. It looks like Apple's engineers have no solution yet, and their last option is just to offer a replacement to satisfy the customer and use the "lab testing" as an excuse. It's a minor issue for many and im surprised Apple hasn't addressed and fixed the issue already. Their just piling up old 24" ACD and losing money by having to offer replacements. My next monitor definitely wont be an Apple monitor, despite the disappointing lack of features, i can't deal with this problem. You'd think, a $899 (rather expensive) monitor made specifically for your MBP would work without any issues, but unfortunately Apple failed to test the new MBP on the 24" display. There's no doubt that this is a firmware problem and Apple just either ignored this problem or had no initial fix and didn't let that affect the new MBP release date. Well, you can bet i'll be pushing for nothing less than a replacement or an upgrade to a 27" ACD. Have never been so disappointed with an Apple product. Some days its like a black out every hour or two, others its like 2-5 times an hour. Just to note, my old MBP worked flawlessly on the 24" ACD, but i sold it to buy the new one. Hopefully this situation will have a happy ending.

May 25, 2011 6:32 PM in response to DanRybby Hey Ryan,I decided to call AppleCare about this issue and the person who handled my call advised me to take it to an ASP. I was hoping this to be given a case number before heading off to an ASP. Will keep you guys updated once I haul this baby to my local service center.

May 26, 2011 10:35 AM in response to mjz12956by ucruci,Macbook Pro Software Update 1.4 and Macbook Pro EFI Update 2.1 did not solve the problem.
The flickering, blackout, flashing, etc. problem all came back within minutes on my Apple 24 LED display connected to my
5-inch: 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro
- 2.2GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7 - 8GB 1333MHz
- 750GB 5400-rpm1
- Intel HD Graphics 3000
- AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5

May 27, 2011 8:34 PM in response to sciencegalby sciencegal,Got a call this morning that Apple would take my 24" ACD back and replace it with a 27" provided I pay the price difference. I'm glad we got this issue finally solved. I stressed the new 27" right away with brightness at 100% for two hours using my 2009 MBP and it works flawlessly (no rapid horizontal shifts). And none of the issues (frequent blackouts and horizontal shifts) either when we hooked it up to the 2011 MBP. Thanks Apple!

May 28, 2011 1:04 AM in response to sciencegalby Dirki,After more than 2 weeks with the new panel in the 24" (Exchange because black marks) i get no flickering, black screen or anything else. All things works fine with my 2011 15" Thunderbolt MBP.
No one knows why, included my Apple Dealer, because the official Statement from Apple Support Europe is, that Thunderbolt is incompatible to the 24" Cinema Display.

May 28, 2011 7:25 AM in response to DanRybby xaizilla,I'm also having the same issue with my 24" LED monitor and newly upgraded iMac i7 (from the standard G5 in 2009).
Screen has now flickered its way to darkness and has not yet come back on...
... Thunderbolt takes job literally...

May 28, 2011 9:24 AM in response to El Presidenteby xaidex,I'm having the same issue with my iMac so I'd say it's a thunderbolt/mini-display issue.

May 28, 2011 10:10 AM in response to xaidexby NicoNB,A week ago I posted having similar problems with my new iMac TB. Yesterday a replacement iMac arrived.
This new iMac does not fix the problem with the glitches and black out som my 24" ACD.While I was waiting for the replacement i used my old configuration again, a 24" iMac and a 15"MBP.
During this periodI did not experience any problems with the 24" ACD.
I called Apple to complain about this problem, they said it is under investigation but cannot tell me when this problem will be fixed. They suggested I returned my iMac to get my money back!!!!!!

May 29, 2011 3:52 PM in response to Farooq90by Wdrhash,Persistence pays off. It took repeated calls to customer relations, but I finally got a representative that was able to get a capture approved, and sent out a 27" ACD that works flawlessly with my 2011 MBP. Don't give up until you get a rep that is willing to do the hardware capture, it is unacceptable to have to wait in limbo for a software update that may or may not resolve these blackout issues.

May 30, 2011 5:43 AM in response to DanRybby Sorood,I am a new poster to this forum.
I have recently bought a new 17 Inch MBP.
I have a 24inch screen from Dec2009.
The screen works fine with my previous MBPs (Stolen) and yet with my new MBP I have a blackout every few minutes.
Really not happy about it. Wish I had never been burgled, my old 17 MBP worked fine.
This is really not usable.
Is there any hint of a firmware or software fix?

May 30, 2011 8:54 AM in response to Soroodby sciencegal,I wish Apple would tell people about this problem before they buy a new MBP, but I can see why they don't. So far I've read only one posting that mentioned a hardware solution (Dirki, a few days ago), but generally, the problem doesn't seem to respond to hardware or software updates. Sorry. My best bet would be to go to the genius bar and have the display checked in for repair. If they miraculously solve the problem, you're good. More likely they will not solve it, so you have to bring it in again. After about 3 times, you might ask them for an upgrade to a 27", which so far, seems to be the only solution that really works.

May 30, 2011 12:39 PM in response to sciencegalby loyalwhite,@sciencegal - that approach works great if you've just bought your MBP and ACD together, but the problem that I have (and shared by a few others on here it seems) is that we have a new MBP with an older ACD which is no longer under warranty. I would be interested to hear if anyone in that situation has had the upgrade to 27" offered to them by Apple.

May 30, 2011 1:47 PM in response to loyalwhiteby sciencegal,@loyalwhite I bought my ACD back in 2009 and was offered an upgrade to 27". Admittedly, I started complaining about the old 24" when it was still under warranty (almost a year old) because it had blackouts and rapid shift issues even in combination with my old 2009 MBP.

May 30, 2011 1:50 PM in response to DanRybby Condios,As an entrepreneur, I'm not in the habit of whining.
Facts are simple: the good old 24" display just doesn't work with a new thunderbolt mini displayport.
I think I have been waiting long enough for Apple to come up with a solution, and maybe they will, maybe they won't. But I'm an entrepreneur.
So, I auctioned of all my old 24" displays (some less then a year old) and bought new 27" displays.
On a final note, I'd like to add that this is looking more an more like something we used to blame Micro$oft for.
Put out very expensive original hardware with your label on it, that doesn't work together.
Put out expensive OS costs (what will Lion cost me in a few days, just after investing in this expensive product?). Make people pay lots of money through a App Store on Mac OSX (isn't this like the "software vault" Micro$oft tried to launch some years ago?). Have an extremely short EOL expectancy.
Apple is going the Micro$oft way: the consumer is no longer relevant, only in market shares are.
So be it. But I'll stick to Apple nevertheless ;--))
