My AppleTV 2 loses network connectivity every now and then in the middle of playing a movie/tv show.  The connection is wired so therefore it is not a wifi issue. It happens often while playing a Neflix movie but it also happens while playing movies off of my iTunes collection on my iMac and less often with TV shows. Once this happens the Apple TV won't connect to any online service (my Internet is still ok), so it looks to me like the network stack on the ATV2 crashed. If I wait long enough (a few minutes) it comes back to life. Otherwise if I am impatient I'll pull the plug on it for a couple seconds and upon restart all is fine again.

Anyone else experiencing this too?

    MIne does the same thing.

THere is lots of discussion out therer with no real answer.

After getting kicked off the network i can either restart my router or unplug and replug the apple tv and it works again for another 10 to 20 minutes....

THis *****. Where does the answer lye?

Only my apple tv is disconnected from the network as I am typing this on the computer and had to log in etc....

We cant be the only ones with this issue. Someone wrote that thousands are having this issue and if that was the case I think apple would have come to the rescue.

    SO WHAT IS IT?????

    Please help us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hey, it's me again....

the next time i got disconnected while watching a movie (20min), I just closed the lid on my Mac Book Pro and the ability to "see" my computer was reestablished....

    Anybody???

Interesting about restarting the router ...  Next time try unplugging and plugging back in the network cable. I am guessing that should do it too.

The closing and reopening of the lid sounds like a different but related problem. Try stopping ad restarting iTunes and see if it does the same thing. That had happened to me previously too and I am guessing in that case it is a problem with iTunes. Have you updated to the latest iTunes?

In my case I tried all that but my ATV2 couldn't even get to mobile me or netflicks. I also tried the network test from the setting menu and none of it worked. The rest of my computers and iphone had no problems accessing the Internet so that is why I think it is the network stack on the ATV2 that crashed.  Next time I will also try to ping it's ip from another machine to see if it is accessible.

Itunes and Apple TV are updated. Closing and reopening my laptop makes my computer once again 'findable' by Apple TV after being kicked off...

SO maybe it is my laptop loosing connectivity with my Wifi at home which is a 'Rogers" 3G stick plugged into a stand alone base station.

Others have found some sort of a solution after having the same issue without changing any hardware...

    THoughts?

Your problem is different than mine.  When this happens try and see if you can access the internet with Safari from your laptop.  That should tell you if you are "loosing" connectivity to your wifi.  If it is ok then the problem is between iTunes and your ATV.

In my case my ATV can not access any network services.  It happened again last night (this time while listening to music) and I tried unplugging and re-plugging the network cable and that got it working again.  I have moved the ATV2 cable from my router to the same switch that my iMac is on to see if it is an ethernet compatibility issue (would be odd but at a loss for what else could be the problem).

I just bought my ATV, and I have had the problem of having no signal every time I turn on ATV. Very frustrating. I have to unplug and re-plug to get it to come on.

    This is the answer:

On your APPLE TV REMOTE, hold down the menu key and the arrow down key at the same time for about 6 seconds. ATV comes on. It's like a re-boot. Apple should fix this, but it's better than having to unplug and re-plug every time.

That's a workaround not an answer, the answer most likely lies with fixing your network, it's not an issue with the Apple TV.

May be a work around, but it's happening to so many people. I have Comcast, Airport & iMac. Do you have any suggestions? It is better than unplugging & plugging every time I want to watch ATV. At least it works.

I'd be inclined to fix your network rather than keep restarting the Apple TV. Many network issues are a result of interference, you might try using another wifi channel, other issues can result from incorrect settings.

ummm how do you fix a wired network?

I agree that some of the things that people have mentioned are probably due to wi-fi networking issues however my original post was about a wired network.   I even moved the ATV2 from being plugged into the router to plugging it into a switch to see if that helps but still have problems every now and then.

melindacoxhall, thanks for the work around.  I'll try that next time.

    Hi,

I had my ATV2 for 6 months working perferctly wirelesly. I´ve bought and configure the Time Capsule as an extension of my wi fi network and using Time Machine for back up. By the same time, Apple release a new update for ATV software.

Since then (I can´t say if because of Time Capsule or new software release), my ATV2 loses wi-fi connection and asks for the network and password again and again, every time I turn it on to use it.

So, I think it´s not a network problem, as it was working perfectly during a long period.

I hope you can help me with it.

    Regards

I have the exact same issue as salcedo001 on an ATV2 that is less than 45 days old.  I've tried a multitue of fixes (changing the standby time, setting static IP) all of which haven't fixed my problem.

I have an older ATV2 that works like a champ so I'm not convinced that my network is the problem here.

In order to get my ATV2 back online I either have to restart it or add the network settings back. I'm an Apple Fanboy tried and true, but I really hope that iOS 5 is out soon because this is tiring!

    regards,

Not sure if anyone has seen a resolution to this but you can add me to the list of people wondering why the heck my ATV2 drops the network connection and I have to yank the power cord out to get it back.  If it cuts out one more time during a tv show I think I will ust toss it in the trash and buy a PC to connect to my TV.

If anyone has seen a solution to this PLZ let me know.

    thanks,
