Q: Mac is typing by itself & adding spaces to everything I type

Hi,

A couple of days ago, I opened my Macbook, and on my password screen I noticed that words or letters were being filled in, without me even  pressing anything. It would just show something  being typed in,  cleared, and typed in  again. I would then just highlight the text and delete it, putting my password in and I could log in fine. Now, when I type online,  oftentimes my mac  will  start  typing  by itself, things like  " nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn."  until I stop it. It  also adds spaces  between letters that  I have to go back and erase, which is hard because the delete button won't work half the time!

Here is a s ample ofme  trying t o type  normally.  I'm  pressing  all  the r ight  keys but     t      h is  is  how i t                  turns out                                              .

I've restarted, but nothing changes. Just wondering if anyone else has any ideas, before I have to take it in .

Sounds like a hardware error with the built in keyboard. Something connected through USB or Bluetooth, which could disturb the connection?

Otherwise bring it to an Apple Service Provider in order to have a look on it. Maybe it's still under warranty?

To me it sounds like it is a result of something that happened to your computer. Did you spill anything on it or did you totally discharge the battery?

Something similar has been reported as being caused by the battery swelling and putting pressure on the underside of the keyboard. Definitely take it in for a physical check.

I heard that it affected the trackpad and the audio port but it makes sense that it could effect the keyboard.

    Hi,

I'm having the same issue. My macbook is about 3.5 years old, have never had a problem with it, nor have I ever dropped it/spilled anything on it.

Today whenever I go to type it automatically starts typing letters over and over and adds spaces. Example: ittttttt       looooooooks like thiiiiiissss   .

Having found this thread I unplugged the power cord, and it's now running on battery power. It's still typing by itself regardless of battery power, or cord power. Any thoughts?

Note: I have a wireless internet connection. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

    Please help!

If not a connection error, looks like your keyboard has got damaged. This may simply happen, especially after pouring water on it, by error, or using too much spirit to clean it. If so, a new one is waiting for you. Before taking a decision, test with another USB keyboard connected to it, and see what happens. If it behaves OK, as I think, then you have to replace your keyboard.

my imac is doing the same thing but NOT adding spaces.  When I'm on the internet typing in the search box or in word typing on a page, it will just start typing iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii or jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj.  It won't stop.  I changed out the keyboard and the mouse and it still does it.
