Q: AppleWorks WP glitch with Snow Leopard.

I just converted to 10.6 and am finding that with the AW word processor, I will be typing along and suddenly the inputting will stop on the screen.  It has to catch up to itself. I was told by Apple tech that this is probably due to it not being compatible with the 64 bit conversion.  Does anyone know how to correct this?  Is there an app for this?  I'd like to be able to keep using AppleWorks for a while longer, at least until it becomes totally obsolete.  It's a good program.   Thanks for any help.

Although AppleWorks becomes more & more "flakey" as you update Mac OS X, it is compatible with Snow Leopard. I think you have run into the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

Yep, old bug! AppleWorks appears to never remove items from that folder. Additionally, it will only show 10 items in the "Recent Items" menu, and when the folder is too full the items it shows are not the most recent!

So I've modified one of Apple's Folder Actions AppleScripts and attached it to that folder and it takes care of everything for me. Whenever AppleWorks adds a new item to that folder, this script automatically runs and deletes all but the newest ten from the folder.

Below is the contents of the script: copy it, paste it into a document in AppleScript Editor (or Script Editor), and save it to [Hard Drive]/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts. Then from /Library/Scripts/Folder Actions run "Enable Folder Actions.scpt" and then "Configure Folder Actions". In here you can select the AppleWorks recent items folder (~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting points/Recent Items) and attach that script to it.

This has been driving me nuts for a couple of years, thanks for the script and good instructions.

I'm hopeful it will cure the problem

    thanks
