I found a solution at last! At least it works for me. I am back to non-dropout airtunes

After much resetting, re-sighting, etc., I went back to 'channels'. Guess what? Success (for me at least) on Channel 12 - and ONLY Channel 12 !! Even holds good when reconfigured into WDS extended network. Happy days!

I wonder why Ch 12 would make a difference? Garry, did anything change in your environment to create interference? If all channels are equal and this has nothing to do with interference then I can't imagine why ch 12 is different.

Well I couldn't take it any more, so I downgraded my firmware to 7.4.2 and the skipping has gone away. I've also noticed that my MacBook Pro and iMac get better signal strength with better speed.

While I'm normally a fan of upgrading whenever something is released, this is one case where upgrading causes more harm than good. If you're having problems, just downgrade to 7.4.2. You won't lose anything, and you'll gain some stability and speed back.

I went back and switched my firmware to 7.4.... solved my problem (at least my airport expresses played for 2 hours without interuption).  I'll try the chanel change if I can figure out how to do it and if problem reoccurs.

BTW.  I have 5 AE's.  Two are extending my network (I live on 1 acre).  Three are for airplay.  Those three I rolled back to 7.4 and airplay seems to be fine now.  The extenders I left at 7.5.

Dav.... found it.... change the setting off your main airport extreme under manual mode... not the airport express it self!

Still need help with changing channels.  After I change the channels of 2.4ghz (in my case changed to channel 10), two of my five airport expresses still default to channel 149 on 5ghz.  I have tried reseting them and they still like 5ghz for some reason.  Any advice????  Thanks.

Hi all I am having the same oproblems but it seems to be random and happens about 4 to 5 times an hour, where can I get the older firmware version and is it easy to do.

    Thanks.

Just to throw my two cents in, but I am having the same problem --  AX units will periodically go quiet and then after a few moments resume streaming music.

I'm running 5 AX units. Three are connected via ethernet on a gigabit network. One of the ethernet units creates an "N" network that the the 4th AX connects to (and which nothing else connects to) while the 5th AX connects to the house's general use G network (it's a big house and a big network). But other than music most of the network traffic is wired. Most connect to stereos with analog cables, but one of the wireless units has a TOSLINK connection to the stereo.

All are the newer N series AX units with 7.5.2 firmware, and itunes is 10.2.2.14 running on a Vista PC.

Miscellaneous laptops, ipads, itouch. Both of the latter use the Remote utility. A couple of gigabit network switches.

The PC with itunes on it is connected via ethernet. All music is stored on a home server, connected via the gigabit LAN, running Ubuntu 10.04 with Samba and fast eSata drives.

I see that some have had success dowgrading the AX firmware, and I may have to try that. The Airport utility was upgraded to 5.5.2 before the AX devices were upgraded to 7.5.2. At my GF's house all her music is stored on her laptop and she has the same problem, so I'm pretty confident it's not a server issue.

To try and narrow the problem down I am going to try:

    1. Airfoil instead of itunes (although I'll have to figure out how to play my itunes library)
    2. Using only the wired devices to see if its the wireless that is causing the problem
    3. If step 2 solves the problem then sequentially add the wireless devices back on -- I'm wondering if one flaky AX unit could cause a sync problem for the whole AX network and cause the skip? I wish there were a diagnostic routine for the AX units -- how does apple maintain sync across these devices?

I'll report back once I know more, but it is annoying.

    Hello,

Having some of the same problems you have experienced with two airport express devices. How did you revert back to 7.4.2?  Thanks in advance...
