Q: What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

I was disappointed to learn that Apple will turn off Mobile Me next year. I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me. I haven renewed my Mobile Me subscription when I bought a new iMac in January. Now I have to go through a bunch s__t to get a refund.

I am not interested in iClouds, iPhones, iPads, etc. I just don't want all the extra stuff. I just liked having an easy to post a website and create decent looking webpages.

You have to pay for iCloud, right? If I don't use and don't intend to use any iOS devices, what good is iCloud? Does it have any value?

What happens to my iDisk after June 30, 2012? Does it disappear?

Will iWeb be killed as well? I am told that you can publish webpages with iWeb to 3rd party sites, but if the application is no longer supported, it won't be long before it won't work correctly.

Are there any applications as good as and EASY as iWeb to use?

I know that building a web site isn't the most fun thing in the world to do and learn about if you deem yourself "not tech savvy" but use this as an opportunity to learn what's out there! It's like relying on that employee who knows how to do that certain job no one else knows how to do.. and suddently up and leaves your company... always good to have a back up and keep learning... especially when it comes to technology... I'm still a fan of Apple keeping up with it's competitors... and look forward to shopping at the Retail Stores without one less thing that their employess have to get me hooked on..

Yes, this may not be specifically an iWeb concern as much as it is about the web hosting services of MobileMe, but this is a very big concern for many people using and paying for this service.

I use the MobileMe services to publish galleries for home and for proof galleries for my photographic business.  I have invested a lot of time and effort at creating my professional site using iWeb and Aperture.

For Apple to not provide any information other than to say that MobileMe is cancelled, is unacceptable.  We pay good money for this service.  Many of us have been using this service since iTools, through .Mac, and continue with MobileMe, wading through the different re-branding efforts.  I paid the money for the ease of use, the ability to change my site whenever I want, and for dependability & reliability.

While other options may exist for people to publish and host their sites, we've paid for this service, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect better proactive communication from Apple to its continuing customers.  A little loyalty the other way wouldn't hurt!  Apple's leaving us in the dark, and potentially is going to, as another poster put it, "pull the rug out from under us".

I've been using Macs for a long time, and it's seeming more and more that users have to incorporate work-arounds to get things to work properly.  From my experience with Apple products, this isn't the Apple way.  I chose to work with Apple computers because, as Mr. Jobs said the other day, "it just works".  Well, from the information that Apple has formally provided, that is not the case with web hosting, and not the case for my perfectly functional iPhone 3G, which won't work with iOS 5.  I know the iPhone is for another forum, but to see my iPhone 3G capabilities become obsolete because Apple doesn't want to include it (maybe it will force some 3G owners to buy newer iPhones) is very disconcerting.

Throughout typing this post, I've been on the phone with AppleCare support, and with MobileMe support, both of which had little to no information on this matter.  I was told by one support advisor that he was "pretty sure that web hosting will continue", but couldn't provide anything more clear than that.

I feel that Apple's really dropped the ball on this issue for what are arguably it's most loyal of customers.

    Very disappointing.

Agree with all you say Dave. I too use both the photo galleries and iWeb hosting for business and business requires continuity of service. There appear to be some on here that don't care that important parts of iWeb sites do not function when hosted on third party servers or that the ease of directly using the Mobile Me service is part of the reason for using iWeb in the first place.

The lack of information when people's income is at stake here is to put it mildly disappointing. One thing is certain, we need to make our needs known via the Apple Product Feedback forms.

MobileMe was never ever designed to host business sites anyway.  It was only designed to host personal sites which is why there are many features missing from MobileMe that are provided by other servers.

I realise that publishing to MobileMe and another server are not the same and that certain features don't work, but that is why there are workaround available that you can use.

To overcome the blog comments issue, you can use WordPress instead where people can comment.  You can look into using a commenting feature such as http://www.intensedebate.com and good servers/hosts do provide password protection.  Hit counter alternatives are available out there so nothing is insurmountable.

    Dear Apple,

Thank you for dragging your feet in total indifference and neglect of countless iWeb users. For years I have subscribed to MobileMe simply because of iWeb. But...

Now I have found Weebly (www.weebly.com), and I'm kicking myself for not knowing about it before. For just $36/year I get hosting plus:

    - over 100 gorgeous templates

    - drop-down menus

    - photo gallery and slideshow

    - shopping cart with PayPal

    - built-in SEO and site stats

    - contact form, blog, forum, polls

    - automatic mobile versions of the site

    - unlimited storage and 100MB file uploads

    - audio/video players, YouTube embeds

    - Google maps, PDF and other embeds

    - site search

    - HTML snippets

    - password protection (site/page)

    - web-based site editing, nothing to download

Loyal Apple customer still, but soon parting ways with MobileMe, for good...

Apparently Apple does have a patent for iWeb on the iPad. So perhaps we should all just wait and see how this plays out. http://twitpic.com/5aq5yf

I want to add my concerns and disappointment that Apple potentially will not be supporting iWeb any longer nor the hosting of the iWeb websites.

i have used iWeb for my business since the day it's come out and I love it.  I have tried other programs and iWeb is the best!  It's silly that they will discontinue the one button uploading.

I wish they would expand iWeb to make other programs and software similar to all the free ones out there and the more sophisticated ones like WordPress or Rapidweaver.

PLEASE Apple, continue iWeb!  And Please enhance it!!!!

    Hi Joeswell,

Though my response does not answer your question, a section of your post bothers me: "...I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me...".

You as a teacher you should know OK is the abbreviation for, Oklahoma, the word you should have used is, 'okay’. You say "...I liked using iWeb...", does that mean you have already stopped using it?

Yes, we all have our pet peeves, however when I see educators using incorrect grammar, spelling, and words it quite bothers me. Why does it bother me? Have you seen the writing skills of folks coming from high school even college into the business world? It is atrocious. When told to rewrite the document they become miffed saying "that is how I was taught, you are just being too picky!". Makes one wonder.

Saying you are a teacher I have responded to you. :-(  For anyone that chimes in "oh you are the grammar and spelling police huh", well someone must be. In the business world these folks are getting eaten alive. It starts with their teachers.

    Hi Ric,

I notice that in the second paragraph of your reply to Joeswell you wrote; "You as a teacher YOU should know..." I think the phrase you are searching for here is; "As a teacher you should know..." See, that added "YOU" in your original reply is not really "proper" grammatically speaking. It is just a little thing. Normally I wouldn't even say anything about it. However, you seemed like the type of guy who would be "helped" by someone pointing it out to you. Do you know what I mean?
