Q: Disk Drive ejecting itself

My Time Machine disk drive has been "ejecting" itself since I installed Snow Leopard. I'm not unplugging it, or turning it off. I'm not touching it.
I'm getting the following error message:
"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off."

My question is why would a disk drive be "ejecting" itself. I've turned off the auto backups, and unselected the drive as the backup disk. It is still "ejecting" itself which leads me to believe the problem isn't with Time Machine but with something else - something connected with Snow Leopard because this wasn't happening five days ago before I installed SL.

    @ cgreco16

Thanks for the info.  I have never seen or heard of these chip's makers, and they are not the ones that have shown up in previous failing USB drives.  What make/model is this drive?

Have you googled it?  This could be a known product problem.  I'd like to rule that out.

    @xefned

Check your power saving settings.  One of the sneaky things that happens if you take the "max battery life" group is it shuts down peripheral interfaces on battery power - like USB or FW.

Used to drive me crazy using an external mouse....

The drive is a Fantom Drive 2TB External, model GF2000EU.

After installing the 10.6.4 USB kernel extensions and still having the drive self-eject, I tried swapping out the USB cable.  It is an older but thicker looking cable.  So far my drive has stayed connected for 8 days.  Keeping my fingers crossed this time.

Hey Richard, thanks for the heads up - I will check my power saving mode.

As it turns out, five minutes after I posted my power supply theory, my 1T USB drive ejected itself. So I was totally wrong. But I couldn't delete my earlier post. (Hence the "it's all lies;" I was responding to myself.)

I'll check my power mode now:

"I have "put the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible" checked. I'll try unchecking that to see if it makes a difference.

I am also having an issue with external USB drives unmounting or becoming unavaliable without unmounting (icon is still there, but access to that drive locks things up) while in use or sometimes overnight. It has happened to multiple drives from Seagate. The first drive was an internal drive in a USB external chassis. It started unmounting around the time of one of the Snow Leopard upadates and would actually unmount and remount which between the power fluctuations to the drive and interacting with the virus scan causes enough problems in a very short time period that the drive actually had a serious hardware failure. I replaced it with a new Seagate GoFlex Desk External Drive, which I have verified runs perfectly fine on my older PowerMac G5, but unmounts pretty regularly on my 2010 iMac, especially when syncing via iTunes.

I have updated drivers from Seagate and the works. This really does feel like a Snow Leopard issue.

The logs show this when an unmount happens:

Help would be GREATLY appreciated. My Media library (music, photos, and movies) is largely unusable because of this (which as a photographer is a serious issue) and it has cost me real money, both in replacing the dead hardware and lost productivity.

    Thanks,

    Sean

    Hey all,

I think I have a related issue with my Atech PROExpress-7 SDHC card adapter. It fits in the expresscard slot of my Macbook Pro 5,1 (2.53GHz, late 2008), but connects through USB (detailed info at the bottom of post).

So I've used it for about a year (2010) without trouble and then it started disconnecting sporadically. Now, I cannot even transfer 1GB from my 4GB SDHC card and it sometimes disconnects when I'm just viewing its content in finder :-(.

    Useful info?

    - OSX 10.6.7; I cannot remember which update happened when I noticed the problem (Dec2010-Jan2011)

    - Time machine with LaCie Starck Mobile Hard Drive 500Go (USB-port) work without a glitch

    - SanDisk Extreme FireWire Compact Flash card reader works without a glitch

    - The self-eject happens even when my computer hasn't had time to get hot (it runs between 70C to 90C, but that's another issue or a non-issue as one authorized Apple repair techs insisted…)

I have tried disabling disk-sleep in the power saving settings without success, but don't feel comfortable playing around with the kext files given the warnings in previous posts… The adapter is also discontinued :-(

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated :-)

    Cheers!

I only started having the problem in April.

I hear the iCloud has a arrived and all sounds great. But would be greater if would be better if my Time Machine worked before I start thinking of clouds.

Booting from a drive with 10.6.2 has allowed me to copy all night, 200+GB of data, with no problem on my late 2009 MacBook.

Mpthe 599gb Seagate drive I put in my MacBook went bad last Thursday an the machine wouldn't boot. Disk Utility could not repair, and DiskWarrior could make a readable recovery view but could not write fixes back. I cloned the recovery view, so I had as much as possible. My TimeMachine backup was a few days old. Carbon Copy Cloner reported IO errors in several segments of my Filevault home folder, so I know I lost some data...

Anyway, I put in a new drive, did a 0 byte format, then a fresh install of 10.x from the MacBook DVD and downloaded all the updates. Trying to copy my data back resulted in ejects of my Drobo every 15-45 minutes. After nine such ejects over to days of trying, I just booted off a USB drive with 10.6.2 and it works just fine and as been chugging along the last two nights with no issue.

There may be other issues here, but I most certainly have the USB issues that Data Robotics says started around 10.6.4 and it involves power not being set correctly or something in the USB hardware.

I plan to make a USB boot of Mac OS X 10.6.3 (if that one still works) to keep around for such situations like moving disk data around.

(I am reposting this to fix my embarassing iPad-induced typos...)

SUMMARY: Booting with 10.6.2 has allowed me to copy 200+GB of data with no problem on my late 2009 MacBook. It let it run all night, and not a single eject occured to my Drobo via USB.

My 500GB Seagate drive in my MacBook went bad last Thursday and the machine wouldn't boot. (This was a drive I upgraded myself.) Disk Utility could not repair it, and neither could DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior was able to make a readable recovery view and warned I should copy data off of the failing drive quickly. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the recovery view, so I saved as much data as possible. (My Time Machine backup was a few days old so I wanted to save as much as I could). Carbon Copy Cloner reported IO errors in several segments of my FileVault home folder, so I know I probably lost some data... That's an risk with disk images for another topic...

Anyway, I put in a new drive, did a 0-byte format (always, to test the device), then did a fresh install of 10.x from the MacBook DVD. Idownloaded all the updates (10.6.7). Trying to copy my data back (from Drobo to MacBook) resulted in ejects of my Drobo every 15-45 minutes. After nine such ejects over two days of trying, I just booted off a USB drive with 10.6.2 and now the copies work just fine and have been chugging along the last two nights with no issues.

There may be other issues here that cause unexpected ejects, but I most certainly have the USB issues that Data Robotics says started around 10.6.4 and involves power not being set correctly (or something) in the USB driver.

I plan to make a USB thumb drive boot of Mac OS X 10.6.3 (if that one still works) to keep around for such situations like moving disk data around.

((And let me apologize for not figuring out how to edit or delete my first post. I know this topic goes back to 2009 and discusses an issue that happened long before this, but it still seems to be the most active topic for bad ejects -- even if there are multiple causes.))

According to my own sad experiences, the "USB random disconnect" issue was introduced in 10.6.5. That matches what Data Robotics told "jasonh1234": https://discussions.apple.com/message/12971480?tstart=0

The best you can do is report it to Appple at http://bugreport.apple.com The more duplicates they receive, the more likely they are to finally do something about it.

Using the recent OS X Lion DP4 release from WWDC, I have been writing zeros to my 2TB LaCie Minimus USB 3 disk for several hours and have yet to encounter any problems.

Here's hoping that Apple manages to backport the USB driver to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or 10.6.9... or maybe they have simply reverted to the USB driver from 10.6.4

    I resolved my problem.

I have a G-Drive mobile, 500GB, OS X 10.6.7. Was using the FireWire cable and time machine backups were always failing, disk ejected. I even went to the Genius Bar, to no avail.

I tried my USB cable, works.
