Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/wesites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by removing them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing (if you were able to delete them directly on the iPad, then the next time you synced photos they would be put back onto the iPad, unless you remembered to also remove them from your computer).

Great -- this is what I needed.  Also have a tweak.  I downloaded directly from my camera and have now synced with my mac, so want to delete a large batch of photos from the iPad.  Is there a way to delete a large number of photos at once?  Thx

On a Mac you can do it via iPhoto after importing the photos - you should get a 'Delete Photos' option (which I assume only applies to the photos that you import).

OK, if you import a set of photos from iPad Photo to Mac iPhoto, but choose to leave them also on the tPad, how do you then delete the set from the iPad (or some of them) without having to re-import to iPhoto or delete one by one on iPad?  In other words how do you delete more than one photo at once directly on iPad??  Thanks.

I know how to do it on a PC, but not on a Mac (still learning how to use my Mac)

Well, but I'm interested in deleting more than one without using Mac or PC, directly on the iPad.  May be impossible, which would be a dumb omission by Apple.

I just got back from  UK vacation (Essex, London, York) and have 855 photos on the iPad, although I probably took over a 1,000.  All worked fine, in general.  Couldn't open any movie files from my Nikon that had been downloaded onto the iPad, however, only movies from my iPhone.  Turns out iPhoto won't open them either, and I'd already deleted them from my iPad. Bummer.

In the Photos app there is no select all/delete all option - whether that will be possible in iOS 5 I don't know, but I havn't seen it mentioned. You could try leaving feedback : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Selecting/deleting in thumbnail view will probably be quicker than deleting in full-screen mode on the iPad, but it's not going to be quick doing 855 directly on the iPad, so re-importing into iPhoto and deleting may be quicker/easier

    Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

Ios5 has seemingly ruined my cheat where you would swipe your finger over the photos in a zig zag pattern to quicken the pace of selecting shots to delete.  This is driving me nuts!  Please fix it or give us a select all feature ASAP!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple (there are too many forums/threads/messages for that to happen). If you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
