Just installed the latest Airport Utility, 5.5.3.  It will no longer find the airport extreme connected directly to my machine.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any solutions found?

Running Snow Leopard, latest version, updates, etc.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Please explain what you mean by "connected directly".

What I meant with that is via a network cable, not wireless.

This begs the question. Why do you have the Airport Extreme connected via a network cable, not wirelessly.

Because, not all of the computers in my house connect wirelessly.  What does it matter anyway?!!  My Mac Pro connects wired and I use it for managing the settings on the airport.

Everything on the airport works, otherwise I would not be writing this.  The question remains that I wrote above, has anyone else after the update been unable to find their airport extreme via the utility?

Thanks for the explanation.  I have downloaded AirPort Utility 5.3.3 but haven't installed it yet.  Based on your report, I may wait a while longer to do that.  Perhaps someone else will report their results.  Or I could be brave and install the new AirPort Utility on the Mac that I normally don't use it on.

I have two Macs connected via Ethernet to my Time Capsule.  The "RSSI" values for AirPort for one is around minus 64 and for the other is around minus 77.  Those poor values would give me unacceptably slow throughput if I had to depend on AirPort.

While troubleshooting the issue, I booted into Lion (v3 release) which has the same version of the Airport Utility.  It too cannot locate my A.E.

Using an iMac in the house it does find it wirelessly, but not via the ethernet connection.  It has to be something within the latest release, the iMac also has 5.5.3 installed.

May try installing the software on the windows box to see if the problem repeats with same results.

Just to let you know, I have installed 5.5.3 on both my MacBook & Mac Mini. Both run OS X 10.6.7 and neither had any issue accessing my two (3rd & 4th generation) AirPort Extreme Base Stations.

yes, 5.5.3 got installed today and I lost ability to reach internet.  Went through a long technical ($50) support process to restore Airport Extreme (1st generation) connectivity.

Now discover that I have lost access to my Airport Express which had been working perfectly. It is flashing yellow and Airport Utility does not see it.

I have no idea how to fix this - back to Apple tech support tomorrow (my $50 got me a 30 day follow-up).

anyone who downloaded the AU update via softare update, did you happen to note the size of the update listed in the software update window?

I noticed on the website, the utility is listed at 10.3, the software update window said 12 something, and the actual file manually downloaded is 10.8.

Just wondering if this could be an issue with something missing for you guys.

Please note the size if you use software update and report here.

    Thanks..

That doesn't make sense.  Is that the only thing you installed?  As I understand it, AirPort Utility plays no role in connecting to the Internet.  It's only purpose is for administering Apple's Wi-Fi base stations.

What did the Apple support people have you do to fix your problem?

To respond to others on this thread, I just installed AirPort Utility 5.5.3 (not 5.3.3 as I incorrectly posted earlier) and had no trouble seeing my AirPort units with it.

I'm running SL and had no problem after installing the update via software update. It does however change one screen on the interface from showing that your running dual band to just showing that your using and in my case 3rd generation Airport Extreme. Other than that change I have'nt had a problem with it. I test out my other Airport Extreme before I started using it as a coffee cup platform and it said it was 1st Generation which explained why over the past few days I could not get dual band to work on it.

It make no sense but that is what happened.  Within 5 minutes of the install, every url timed out "waiting for browser request".  It was a 2 hour ordeal involving switch to ethernet than back to Airport Extreme, including reset to default etc.  Stressful to me albeit wireless technician was quite good.  Eventually got everything working, only later I discovered AU no longer sees my Airport Express which is blinking yellow.  I haven't had time yet to call back.

Network Diagnostics and was showing everything OK but every Safari request timed out.  Other details I don't recall now.  Nothing else was installed.

Seems like only the odd machine is effected from what I'm reading. Wondering what is better on an old MBP, the direct download or through Software Update. Going to check to see if TimeMachine backs up ordinal Airport Utility first before proceeding.

I re-contacted Apple wireless tech support and my problem with "lost" AExpress was solved by a reset.
